OhioLINK Luminaries Program: My Experience
by Campbell Pratt, 2022-2023 OhioLINK Luminaries Resident
Michael Schwartz Library
When I tell people I’m an English major, their first question is usually, “That’s great! What grade do you want to teach?” I used to have an answer. After I decided high school education wasn’t a good fit for me, I didn't feel like I had any options left.

In the summer of 2022, I had been working as an undergraduate humanities researcher. I was looking through listings on Handshake to continue working in the academic sphere. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I saw a posting for the OhioLINK Luminaries Resident. I had never worked in an academic library before, but the potential was exciting and only a little intimidating. I applied. I interviewed. I was going to start at the beginning of the academic year.
Paid Library Residency for 2023/2024
Through our participation in the OhioLINK Luminaries program, the library is offering a paid, resume-building position from Fall 2023 through Spring 2024. If you know any students who may be interested in becoming a Luminaries resident, share this information." The deadline to apply is July 5, 2023.

Affordable Learning at CSU
New OER from Textbook Affordability Grant Winners
In fall 2022, Sara Froehlich, Assistant Professor of Practice, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, was awarded a Textbook Affordability Grant to create an Open Educational Resource (OER) for the MTH 181/182 courses. The result of her work can be found on EngagedScholarship @ Cleveland State University's OER website: engagedscholarship.csuohio.edu/oer/.
Mike Okrent and Joseph Anastasi, PT ST Instructors, Operations and Supply Chain Management, were awarded a Textbook Affordability Grant in fall 2022 for their OSM422/OSM622 courses. Through their efforts, Mike Okrent successfully adapted the open textbook Project Management by Abdullah Oguz and created additional resources in Blackboard for his course in the spring.
OER (Open Educational Resources) are high-quality, openly licensed, online educational materials that offer an extraordinary opportunity for people everywhere to share, use, and reuse knowledge.
Braziunaite
Textbook Hero Award Winner
Congratulations to Dr. Ramune Braziunaite, Associate College Lecturer in the School of Communication, who was named 2023's Textbook Hero at the Provost's Virtual Teaching Summit on April 12, 2023. Every year the CSU Student Government Association (SGA) works with the Michael Schwartz Library to select a winner of the Textbook Hero Award. This award goes to a faculty member who put forth significant effort to replace a traditional textbook with a low-cost or open alternative, and whose efforts had a high impact on textbook costs, classroom engagement, and student achievement. While the library helps to market the award and advocates open access, the SGA ultimately chooses the winner. This year's winner's student nominations included messages such as, “Dr. Braziunaite went out of her way to provide our class with 2 free textbooks resources to learn about interracial communication, its theories, and silent racism. … It positively impacted my educational experience in the course.” Nina Faisal, SGA President, presented this year’s award on behalf of SGA.
