WELLNESS DEPARTMENT NEWS

Hi WRAC family!

It's that time of year where we all get a little tired of being inside and look forward to warmer days. I have a few reminders to help keep our indoor experience smooth as well as some March motivation!

  • Please register for all group fitness classes. This helps us in so many ways. It helps our instructors plan their class and equipment set up. It helps us with class attendance tracking so we know how to accommodate our schedule needs. Registering for classes will also allow us know who to notify if we have any last minute class changes.
  • Big congrats to TRISTA! She is our new Wellness Assistant and will be helping with programming and admin for our growing department.
  • Summer WRAC Camp sign ups will start March 18th and Private Swim lesson sign ups will start April 15th.

HRV...WHAT IS THAT?

Heart Rate Variability: The Key to Understanding Your Physiology

With the rise of wearables and a focus on longevity, Heart Rate Variability (HRV) has become an important health metric. HRV reflects cardiovascular health, nervous system balance, and overall recovery. Since lifestyle choices influence HRV, improving it can enhance longevity and well-being.

What is HRV?

HRV measures the variation in time between heartbeats (in milliseconds), where a higher HRV indicates lower stress and better recovery. Regular exercise, stress management, and positive social interactions support higher HRV. However, chronic stress reduces HRV by over activating the sympathetic ("fight-or-flight") nervous system while suppressing the parasympathetic ("rest and digest") system.

The vagus nerve, which regulates parasympathetic activation, can be strengthened through deep breathing techniques, mindfulness, and exercise.
