APP Onboarding Committee Wins PRIDE Experience Team Award


On February 28, 2024, the UCSF APP Onboarding Committee was presented the PRIDE Experience Team Award by UCSF Health President and CEO Suresh Gunasekran. The APP Onboarding Committee was formed in 2017 and has since created a 5 session onboarding program. The structured program informs newly hired NPs and PAs about organization resources, clinical expectations about self coding and clinical documentation resources, professional development opportunities. Over 300 NPs and PAs have completed the program. The Committee members volunteer their time and energy to support their peers because they truly want Our People (the newly hired NPs and PAs) to have the best work experience. The information is presented live (via zoom) by peers, for peers. UCSF Health, School of Nursing and Childrens Hospital Los Angeles APPs--Poster Accepted in Madrid, Spain


Announcing a collaborative APP submission between Pediatric Specialties (Pediatric Hematology), and UCSF School of Nursing. Their work was accepted for poster presentation and publication by World Federation of Hemophilia. Julie Elis UCSF NP student (in photo left), Mary Lesh NP (in photo middle) (UCSF) and Jennifer Donkin, DNP (in photo right) (CHLA) reported data over a 3 year period demonstrating the effectiveness of improved clinical practice and communication within the HRSA based Western states Hemophilia Network region through the implementation of a Nursing (APP and RN) focused tele-monitoring program. The annual program consists of tele-mentoring education and thrombosis care. They will be presenting their work in at the World Federation of Hemophilia Congress in Madrid, Spain April 21-24, 2024.

APPs Presents at the 11th Annual Nursing Research and Evidenced Based Practice Conference


This Clinical Inquiry Conference was held on February 28, 2024 and the following APPs were selected to present their poster or give a podium presentation--EBP fellowship graduate Emily Kelly, Janet Wu, Annika Erhlich, Lisa Catalli. Lisa's poster entitled "Behavioral Resources & Intervention through Digital Group Education (Bridges): An Embedded Group Telehealth Program was awarded 3rd Place in the Best Poster Contest.

Sophie Roeung publishes in the American Journal of Nursing


"Improving Discharge Teaching for Adult Patients with an Ileostomy" authored by Sophie Roeung, DNP, RN who practices in the colorectal surgery department. She and colleague Annette Carley published this article in The American Journal of Nursing on discharge teaching for adults with an ileostomy. Read more.

Emergency Department Transition to Practice Fellowship Accepting New Grad NP Applications until March 31, 2024


This 12-month transition to practice program is designed to expand on the knowledge and skills acquired during graduate or doctoral PA and NP programs. The UCSF APP ED Transition to Practice Fellowship will feature clinical rotations, didactic education, mentorship, and a scholarly project. The program will be led by Ryan Wilson, MSPAS, MPH, BS, PA-C, Thomas Dodsworth, MS, RN, ANP-C, and an experienced team of emergency department APPs who will orient and train fellows in clinical skills, institutional values, and expectations necessary to successfully provide care as an APP in the UCSF Medical Center ED.

March 12, 2024 is the GoLive date for the Bladder Care Protocol in the adult core admission order set under "Nursing Interventions".

Avoid: urinary catheter replacement for acute urinary retention, follow the UCSF urinary retention guidelines. For more information.

Tips: Placing a hot pack to the bladder area works in 60% of cases

Finasteride and Bethanechol don't work for acute retention

Tamsulosin can take 24-48 hours to work (works better in men)

Change is hard. Reframing--How to get on the same page

Responding to patient emotion with empathy and respect helps align you with the patient. Reframing may help patients align with your understanding of what is going on with their illness now. Reframing alerts your patient that things are not how they’ve been. Vital Talk (the serious illness communication skills training group) has a pneumonic for Goals of Care Discussions called “REMAP” (Vital Talk). The “R” of REMAP is for “Reframe.”  Read more.
