Who you are is a distinct difference from what you do. Or, as I like to say it more directly, who you are is NOT what you do.
Jesus proved that point best. He is the Lord and Savior of the world. But for a season, while He walked this earth, His job, His career, His earthly position, was that of a carpenter. His hands worked wood, but His identity was always divine. He was the Son of God long before He performed any miracles or held any titles. And yet, people today still try to define us by our occupation, our roles, our titles.
As women, we are often defined by our roles and responsibilities, whether as wives, mothers, executives, caretakers, or community leaders. These roles are meaningful, but they do not capture the fullness of who we are. But then, how could the world truly recognize or define what it does not understand or believe? In order to truly see and recognize us, they would have to recognize and know the One who created us and know Him for themselves.
The truth is, our identity can only be revealed by the Creator, not culture. The word of God tells us in John 1:10 (NIV), “The world did not recognize Him.”

I remember once asking a co-worker a simple but profound question: “Who are you?” I’ll never forget the look on her face. She paused… confused, even a little overwhelmed. Not because she didn’t know her job, but because she’d never truly considered who she was apart from what she did. That moment was perplexing, but it was also very revealing for the both of us.
So now, I’ll ask you the same question: Who are you?
1. Not what you do.
2. Not who you serve.
3. Not what title you carry.
4. Not even the roles you fulfill at home, in ministry, or in business.
But who are you at your core? Trust me when I say this, I’ve wrestled with that question too. I’ve had to ask myself the same thing repeatedly through the years. And here’s what I’ve come to learn: In order to distinguish who you are from what you do, you have to know the "truth" of who you are, and you can’t know that without knowing the One who created you.

What I Do vs. Who I Am
I was born with God-given gifts for the purpose of His will. These gifts are noted below:
- The gift of prophecy
- The gift of writing
- The gift of creativity
- The gift of communication
These are things I do; they are how God has chosen to express Himself through me. By title, I am a wife. By title, I am a Prophetess. By title, I am a writer. By title, I am a creative. And by title, I am a speaker, etc. Like you, I have many titles and I wear many different hats.
However, who I am, like you are, is:
- A daughter of the Most High
- Chosen before the foundation of the world
- Fearfully and wonderfully made
- Set apart
- Known by name
- Called according to His purpose
It's unfortunate, but often times, these are phrases and parts of scripture we often say loosely, without truly understanding the weight they carry, the honor they hold, and the authority and power they possess. But hear me when I say this, when we truly know who we are, the depth of these six little phrases, changes everything:
- It changes what we accept, what we allow, and what we receive.
- It changes how we walk, how we talk, how we pray, and how we show up.
- It changes lives.
That’s why Father God so deeply desires for us to know our identity in Him; not based on what others say but based on what He has already spoken. So, if ever asked the question again, who are you? Tell them who Father God says you are, with boldness, and assurance, like the daughter of God you are!

You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession. -1 Peter 2:9 (NIV)
The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. -Romans 8:16 (NIV)

My Encouragement for You
Sis, don’t let the world reduce you to a résumé. Don’t let people confine you to a job description, and don’t let your past roles limit your future revelation. You are more than what you do. You are God’s beloved. You are a vessel of glory. You are a living testimony, and you are HIS. Let everything you do be an overflow of who you are in Him.

This Week’s Assignment
Ask yourself the question: Who am I, apart from what I do? Write out 3 “I am” statements grounded in scripture not performance. Speak them over yourself every morning this week.
And remember:
- You are not your profession.
- You are not your productivity.
- You are not your performance.
- You are who God says you are and that will never change.
With love and purpose,
Ceola J.
