‘Love God; And Love Each Other.’ – Jesus
|
|
Thank you for joining us online and connecting with us.
God’s dream for the world is that we live in just peace and tender harmony, fostering a global community in which each members’ rights and responsibilities are affirmed and fulfilled. This community is marked by ‘love,’ in thought, word, and deed. For Christians, there’s nothing esoteric about this ‘love’ – it is visible, tangible, measureable – which means, for the Church, it’s also something we can, and do, practice together.

|
O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son: Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish your purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may serve you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Epiphany at Home
January 6 was the Feast of the Epiphany. To celebrate Epiphany consider participating in an ancient tradition known as "Chalking the Door." This practice consists of marking a blessing in chalk in a specific pattern of letters and numbers, to invite God's blessing on a home, church, or other entryway, and on all who enter its doors during the year. All you need is chalk and a doorway. Prayers and guidance can be downloaded here.
Chalk will also be blessed at the 7:30 p.m. Epiphany Service. You can pick up the chalk and an Epiphany Blessing between 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. January 7, 8 and 10. They will be in bags outside the office doors at Saint Mark’s Cathedral. They will also be mailed to families with children and teenagers at home.
Share your photos of chalking your doors here with Saint Mark’s and consider posting them on social media. By uploading your photos to the link, you are giving Saint Mark’s permission to use them in an Epiphany door display on our social media channels and website.

Small Groups: Living The Way of
Love in Community
Interested in getting to know cathedral members more deeply? Seeking to be connected with other Saint Markans as part of your spiritual journey? Consider joining a cathedral small group. Groups of 8-10 members will meet every other week for one hour on the below dates and times, starting the week of January 25 and continuing through the end of June 2021.
These groups will provide an ongoing experience that fosters belonging and supports faith in daily life. Groups will be co-facilitated by a pair of Saint Mark’s members and will be held on Zoom (until such time as our COVID19 gathering policy permits otherwise). There will be minimal preparation required between sessions.
Groups will pray together, dwell in scripture, and reflect. New to Saint Mark’s? New to the Episcopal faith? Long time member? Groups are open to everyone. Seekers: come to these small groups as you are, and just ‘be’. No prior knowledge or expertise is needed.
We will be using the book The Way of Love: A Practical Guide to Following Jesus, by Scott Gunn. This book is available in the Cathedral Book Shop – give them a call at 612-870-7800. The only requirement to belong to a group is a commitment by the member to attend each session.
Questions? Contact Mary Lusk, Canon Community Developer at: maryl@ourcathedral.org. To sign up, select your preferred day and time and follow the link to register. After registering and before the group starts your small group leader will connect with you with more information and your Zoom link! Note: space is limited.

Wednesday Evenings during Epiphany
Starts this Wednesday, register now!
During the Epiphany season we will return to our Wednesday Evening forum sessions. This time we will be working our way through Presiding Bishop Michael Curry's new book Love is the Way. As in our previous session there will be a 20 minute presentation on the book followed by small group discussions and ending with Compline.
Register and receive your Zoom link here.
While we encourage you to buy and read the book (copies are available through the Cathedral Bookstore), you do not have to have read the book to participate and benefit from the discussion. We have asked our leaders to present as if some folk have not read the book!
It is a fascinating read, filled with autobiographical references to Bishop Curry's life and ministry. We will start the sessions on January 13 with Dean Paul as our initial presenter. Come at 6:00 for conversation with the session beginning at 6:30. Hope to see you on the Zoom screen!

Resources to
Deepen Your Faith
The Gospel of Mark
As you have read and heard, the book of Mark is the assigned lectionary gospel for this year. It is the shortest of the four gospels, and as Cathedral member and seminary Professor Jay Phelan has suggested – it can be read aloud in one setting. Try reading it aloud in your household, or listen to it on the daily podcast offered by The Good Book Club here.. The Good Book Club also offers reflection questions with each reading.
As the GBC tells us: The Gospel of Mark gets right to the point: “The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ.” This gospel is the earliest of the four and the foundational document for Matthew and Luke (the other synoptic gospels, meaning they have a similar narrative style and timeline). It’s a Dragnet-Joe Friday style approach, with “Just the facts.” Mark is skimpy on scene-setting details but offers a laser-focus on Jesus as miracle-worker and Messiah.
Give this book a try, and watch this space for the continuing adventures around the Gospel of Mark.

The Dean's Christmas Appeal
The Dean’s Christmas Appeal for Lionheart Scholarship funds began in 2016. Saint Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral and the Minneapolis College arranged a partnership to support students who are currently homeless, have experienced homelessness in the past two years, or first generation college students who reside in North Minneapolis.
Since 2016 fifty-one students have been awarded Lionheart Scholarships by Minneapolis College. Total giving from St. Marks to the Lionheart Scholarship fund was $104,866.00 from 2016-2020. Donations to the Lionheart fund are requested by the Christmas Appeal, but can also be made at any time during the year.

Thanksgivings
For the hope that the year 2021 will bring peace and renewed spirit and vision to our neighborhood and the world. For the birth of Gabriel Samoudi, born on Christmas Day to Michaela and Amin Samoudi.
An Prayer for our Nation, Adapted from the Book of Common Prayer, p. 821
O Lord our Governor, bless the leaders of our land, that we may be a people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to other nations of the earth. We pray for those in authority and for the peaceful transition of power in these coming days.
Lord, keep this nation under your care.
From the Book of Common Prayer, p. 827
Almighty God, you proclaim your truth in every age by many voices: Direct, in our time, we pray, those who speak where many listen and write what many read; that they may do their part in making the heart of this people wise, its mind sound, and its will righteous; to the honor of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen,
Prayer requests may be made by email here or by completing the online form here.
