Dear St. Markans,
Grace and peace to you in this season of hope and renewal.
Our hearts are heavy as we witness the devastating wildfires sweeping across California. High winds and prolonged drought have accelerated their spread, leaving communities reeling in the aftermath. Homes, businesses, and places of worship have been heavily damaged, and countless individuals have faced the heartbreak of evacuation and power outages, unsure of what lies ahead.
As followers of Christ, we are called to respond to such moments of suffering with compassion and action. Episcopal Relief & Development is actively supporting partners on the ground in California, providing technical assistance and resources to those in immediate need. Together, we can offer prayers, encouragement, and tangible support to help bring comfort and hope to those affected. Episcopal Relief & Development
Let us join our voices and hearts in prayer:
Almighty and compassionate God,
We lift up those whose lives have been devastated by the wildfires in California. Grant them strength, courage, and hope as they navigate the uncertainty and loss they are experiencing. Bless those who risk their lives to fight the fires, and sustain all who are working tirelessly to provide shelter, relief, and care. Guide us to be instruments of your peace, reaching out to our siblings in their time of need. Through Jesus Christ, our Redeemer and Sustainer. Amen.
As we continue to learn more about how we might help, I encourage you to consider contributing to Episcopal Relief & Development’s efforts or to other organizations providing direct aid to those impacted.
In the face of this crisis, let us hold firm to our call to love and serve one another, trusting that God’s light shines even in the darkest of times.
Yours in Christ,
The Rev. Timothy Kingsley, Provost

Join us in Rev. Siri's excitement over our newest art installation "I wonder as I wander" on display now through March 2, 2025.
Ryan Tischer was born and raised in Carlton, Minnesota. As a child, he was exposed to the outdoors during family camping and fishing trips throughout northern Minnesota. In November of 2017 Tischer Gallery was opened in downtown Duluth, MN and in 2020 relocated to Canal Park. Ryan's fine art landscape photography has been displayed in homes and businesses around the world.
Ryan says, "My goal as a landscape photographer and artist is to capture the emotional essence of a scene. The natural world is filled with an incredible energy and mood that is often indiscernible to the naked eye, yet can be captured with a camera. Sometimes the unique mood of light and interaction of elements within a composition create a truly magical photograph. My greatest reward is capturing this natural magic and sharing it with the world."
Most images have been captured using modern medium format digital cameras and lenses, providing exceptional image sharpness and color rendition. All images are printed and framed using museum grade canvas/fine-art papers and archival pigment-based inks.
A meet the artist reception will be held on January 19 after the10:30 service.

Heritage Room Exhibit
A new Exhibit is now up in the Heritage Room. Saint Mark’s Archives houses a great deal of our history and story. The Archives are currently on 3rd floor, so not accessible to all. In an effort to tell about our Archive, this exhibit describes the organization and history of its beginning. During Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany the exhibit will feature the first 6 categories of 16., History and Major Events, Memorials, Building photos, Bishops, Clergy, and Wardens, Vestry and Lay Leaders. During Lent and Easter it will focus on the next 2 categories. Please take some time to look and see some samples of what we have in Archives.

Many people are spiritually curious, but church is not on their radar screens. They didn’t grow up going to church, they’ve heard negative things about Christians, or they’ve had bad church experiences. It’s important faith communities to have spiritual pathways for these neighbors. Most of them will involve meeting people where they are, meaning where they live, work, and play. When we show up in our neighborhoods, workplaces, and the places we volunteer as trustworthy followers of Jesus -- as people who care about, listen well to, and love the people around us -- it’s not uncommon for them to ask us about our lives, priorities, values, and faith. When people experience the light of Christ in others, they are drawn to it and want to know more.
On Saturday, January 25 (with a backup snow date of February 1) anyone interested is invited to gather at St. Mark’s Cathedral from 10 am to 3 pm to hear the Rev. Dr. Michael Moynagh, theologian of the Fresh Expressions movement in the UK, speak. He will be sharing what he and others in the Church of England have learned these last twenty years as they’ve engaged in all kinds of experiments to learn how to love and share Jesus with neighbors who don’t go to church.
On January 25 participants will experience something called “Soul Space” recently developed in the UK, and learn more about “the Missional Journey of Fresh Expressions,” a pathway for those seeking to form what the Episcopal Church in Minnesota is calling “New Christian Communities” (formerly known as “Fresh Expressions”). Mike will focus on material found in his book Godsend: A Handbook for Christian Communities.
It's strongly recommended that you attend the January 25 Godsend gathering in person, but if not it is available via livestream on the ECMN Facebook page here
The week following January 25 Mike and Episcopal Canon for Vitality and Innovation Blair Pogue will be traveling around the state meeting with groups of Episcopalians who want to continue the conversation. The dates, times, and places of these visits will be listed in the ECMN e-newsletter and on the ECMN calendar. If you want to learn more and/or have additional questions for Mike, you are welcome to attend any of these gatherings.
The formation approaches you will be introduced to on January 25 and in Mike’s handbook Godsend can also be used by institutional churches. Please rsvp to Blair Pogue at blair.p@episcopalmn.org by Sunday, January 19 if you plan to come, and let her know if you have any dietary restrictions. The gathering will also be livestreamed.
Mike is the author of numerous books including Godsend: A Handbook for New Christian Communities, Being Church, Doing Life: Creating Gospel Community Where Life Happens, Church for Every Context: An Introduction to Theology and Practice, and more recently, Giving the Church: The Christian Community Through the Looking Glass of Generosity.
