02-23-21: Victory Day- V2 at Rush & Conference Sponsor- Chicago Women in STEM
Inspired by the 2nd vaccine shot this past Saturday, I created a new collage to thank all the staff and volunteers at Rush. What a relief! Be prepared for the pain to be more pronounced after the second shot. I felt the pain that night. Give yourself permission to take it easy after the second dose. If you have a chance to go to Rush, I give them an A+!

We have witnessed a huge need to staff positions for the health sciences. Keep up to date by attending the Chicago Women in STEM conference on March 9-12, 2021. LH&A will again be a sponsor. We’ll be raffling off 4 of our Resume Review consultations. The fee is only $5.00 for the entire conference. Sign up here for the event.

"Our human compassion binds us the one to the other - not in pity or patronizingly, but as human beings who have learned how to turn our common suffering into hope for the future." -Nelson Mandela

What Employers Want To See In Your Resume And Most People Aren’t Doing It
Resume Writing is never easy. You must understand how to craft your resume to quickly grab an employer’s attention in 20 seconds or less. Most people make this critical mistake. They write long, drawn-out job descriptions. This revelation came as a surprise to several of the Baby Boomers in my resume writing class. Jeff spoke up to say, “I’m frustrated. I spend a lot of time going through the employer’s job opening post and make sure I write all about my work to meet everything they ask for. Then, I don’t get an interview. I must be doing something wrong, but what is it?” Wise question. It is not long descriptive work histories employers want to see.

3. WEDNESDAY 03/03 “HOW TO NETWORK TO YOUR NEXT JOB” plus a round of networking - 90 Webinar $20.00
For individuals with 2 months to 32 years of experience, it’s a well-known fact that “networking” plays a significant role in over 75% of the jobs that are acquired. Networking is one of those activities that most job seekers don’t enjoy and, consequently, many individuals don’t make the most of their networking connections and one-on-one opportunities. Effective networking requires a combination of online research (to identify the individuals) and offline human interaction techniques that engage your audience and provide them with ways in which to help you. There are specific “dos and don’ts” of networking and those are explored through hands-on processes during this webinar. Additionally, many job seekers are timid about asking for help and that’s why an effective writing style plays a huge role in how to ask for help in a way that you actually get it from your network of contacts. I’ll show a few examples of those scripts as well and how to engage a network of people that you’ve never met. They CAN help if you know how to ask for it. And if you can’t become a successful networker, your search is likely to take a much longer time to get to your desired destination.

The following are some of the topics covered during this session:

  • Where most job seekers fail in their networking efforts and why
  • How to set important networking goals
  • How to prepare for networking opportunities whether over the phone, via Zoom or in-person
  • How to make the most of each networking encounter
  • How to leverage online and offline networking tactics
  • How you can make it much easier for your network to help you with key introductions
  • How to create advocates inside a company that’s of interest to you.
  • Scripts for gaining networking introduction via email and LinkedIn
  • During the last 30 minutes of this meeting, I will be creating virtual breakout rooms of 6-8 per group where each of you will have an opportunity to put what you’ve learned to use. And everyone will make some new contacts in the process while you have a real-time chance to learn from one another.

Date: Wednesday, March 3rd
Time: 7:00-8:30 PM CST

The Chicago Women in STEM Initiative was established in March of 2018 by Northwestern University postdoctoral fellows and graduate students to galvanize a local Chicago-area STEM community that actively promotes diversity, inclusion, and gender equity. Our third annual symposium on March 10th in 2020 attracted over 120 participants and focused on promoting the development of tomorrow’s women leaders in STEM.

During the 2020-2021 academic year, we have continued to fill the mentoring gap for local early-career women in STEM with our monthly STEM Circuits series. We are also very excited to virtually host our 4th annual Chicago Women in STEM Symposium during March 2021, coinciding with a week-long celebration of International Women's Day. This year's theme will be STANDING UP and STANDING OUT, and through this Symposium, we hope to celebrate local women in STEM, build a community of local students and professionals who are passionate about promoting the advancement of women in STEM, provide opportunities to share struggles and successes with like-minded scientists, and gain perspectives from influential invited women leaders.
