Illinois Air Team @ Hiller Park Saturday 3/21/26

Mobile Testing Units (MTUs) are now available to Illinois motorists in the area. MTUs are specially equipped emissions testing vans that are deployed to select locations to provide additional vehicle emissions testing options for the convenience of motorists. MTUs will be at Village of Johnsburg's Hiller Park this Saturday March 21 from 10:00AM- 4:00PM. Motorists can use the Vehicle Eligibility Check Tool by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or License Plate Number to identify if their vehicles are eligible to test. E-Bikes, E-Scooter, Hoverboard, Onewheel, etc… Regulations and Safety

E-Bikes, Scooter, Hoverboard, Onewheel, etc…offer a fun and efficient way to travel, but they also come with certain risks. On most roadways, bicyclists, including those on e-bikes, scooters, and mopeds, share the same rights and responsibilities as other road users. It's important to stay informed about regulations, safety tips, and how you can contribute to safer e-bike and e-scooter use. Click here for further updated Illinois information.

E-Bikes Regulations and Safety

E-bikes are typically classified into a three-class system based on whether the motor assists only when pedaling and the top-assisted speed. These e-bikes are not allowed on sidewalks and must abide by the Bicycle Rules of the Road.

Types of E-Bikes:

Type 1: Max speed of 20 mph with pedal assist only, no throttle.

Type 2: Max speed of 20 mph with pedal assist and throttle, allowing operation without pedaling.

Type 3: Max speed of 28 mph with pedal assist only, no throttle. These e-bikes are closer to motorcycles and mopeds in function. Riders must be at least 16 years old.

* NOTE: Although Type 1 and Type 2 E-bikes do not have a minimum age restriction, the Consumer Product Safety Commission does not recommend children under the age of 13 operate motorized wheeled vehicles, such as e-bikes, that can travel faster than 10 mph.

How You Can Help

We are committed to promoting e-bike, e-scooter, hoverboard, onewheel, etc… safety throughout the Village, but we need your help to reach everyone.

Parents: If your child rides an e-bike, e-scooter, hoverboard, onewheel, etc…, please review the safety guidelines with them and encourage your child to wear a helmet.

Riders: Follow the safety tips and encourage your friends to do the same.

Drivers: Please be alert and watch for pedestrians, scooters, and bikes, especially in the morning before school starts and in the afternoons after school dismissal.

If your device is not explained in Local Municipal Code Chapter 15, please refer to 625 ILCS 5/ Illinois Vehicle Code. Knowing the rules helps prevent injuries, protects young riders, and keeps roads and sidewalks safer for everyone.

NonHighway Vehicle Registration Renewals are Due

Make sure to get out and renew your Non-Highway Vehicle Registration. March 31 is the last day before the price doubles. Golf carts and other qualified non-highway vehicles may be driven on streets within the Village’s corporate boundaries where speed limit posting is 35mph or less with the exception of Johnsburg Road and Ringwood Road.

They are also NOT permitted on any County Roads or State Roads. Signs have been posted on streets where golf carts are allowed, Mapping is developed and will continue to be updated as additional designated routes and paths are approved. License plates and yearly registration are required for all non-highway vehicles and a fee of $75.00 (vanity) or $60.00 (automatic numerical issue) shall be assessed for all new registrations, late fee(s) apply after March 31st and September 30th. Once the vehicle is plated, a renewal and/or transfer fee of $25.00 will be charged for the same vehicle each year thereafter, click here for further information.

Open Burning of Landscape Waste - Prohibited!

Keep in mind that the burning of landscape waste is NOT permitted at this time. The Village of Johnsburg will not provide warnings to property owners violating burning regulations - citation will be issued. Landscape waste can only be burned during the months of April, May, October and November provided that setbacks and other requirements can be met. Recreational fires, ceremonial fires are exempt but may not be larger than 3’x3’x3’ and cannot contain leaves, grass or shrubbery clippings. Click here for the requirements.

Alternatives to Landscape Waste Accumulation

There are other alternatives to burning your landscape materials. For more information, click here. The Health Department encourages more environmentally sound alternatives to burning of landscape waste and recommends composting, mulching and native landscaping as possible alternatives to reduce/reuse landscape waste, click here for further information. The Village's residential refuse and recycling service begins April 1 and includes the removal of up to 8 bags or cans of landscape waste per week. For more information visit LRS - Johnsburg.

McHenry Township Fire Protection District Siren Maintenance

Braniff Communications will be performing an annual maintenance of tornado sirens throughout McHenry Township between April 15^th – April 17^th.While maintenance is being performed, you may hear a momentary sound from the siren as it begins an actual start-up. Once activated, it will then stop. There will be no prolonged sounding of siren. The maintenance work is to make sure there is no damage and that all parts are working properly. Electronic Waste Recycling & Brush Drop Off

The McHenry Township Road District is again partnering with the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County to offer recycling programs for McHenry Township residents. Your 2026 opportunity to recycle is Saturday, April 18, 2025 from 8:00a.m. to 12:00 p.m. There will be NO drop off of recycling items during the week. Johnsburg Police Department:

Blue Envelope Program for Autism Awareness

In recognition of Autism Awareness Month this coming April, the Johnsburg Police Department is launching a program aimed at engaging in better communication with persons who have communication impairments. If you or a family member struggle from a medically diagnosed communication impairment, and reside within the Village of Johnsburg, you may be eligible to participate in our “Blue Envelope” program. The program is intended to help our Officers with maintaining a positive and productive encounter with a person who experiences communication impairments. The program should provide a foundation for better communication along with reduced anxiety and fear that may result from encounters with Law Enforcement for those impacted with communication impairments.
