🧬 Bio Club Brings Gene Editing to Life with CRISPR

Biology Club is diving into cutting-edge science. With guidance from Science Teacher Maria Vicenty and support from Bio-Rad, students recently conducted a CRISPR gene-editing experiment, successfully modifying the LacZ gene in bacteria. The results? A visual change from blue to white that confirmed their edits worked.

Made possible by student-led fundraising efforts and after-school dedication, this hands-on experiment gave Bio Club students a chance to explore real-world applications of gene editing and sparked thoughtful discussions about its ethical implications. The club also welcomed a guest speaker from Bio-Rad to share insights into CRISPR.

With momentum building and more experiments already in the works for next year, Bio Club is fostering curiosity, collaboration, and a love of science across campus.

🇨🇳 Mandarin Students Explore Language and Culture at Chef Chu’s 🍵

We’re excited to share that our Mandarin classes had a fantastic and authentic field trip to Chef Chu’s yesterday!

Students proudly practiced ordering food using Mandarin measurement words, expressed appreciation in Mandarin, and learned traditional round-table dining etiquette.

From the custom of the youngest person pouring tea for everyone, recipients tapping two fingers on the table in thanks, to understanding why chopsticks should never be placed upright in bowls, it was a meaningful hands-on cultural experience.

A heartfelt thank you to our parent chaperones, Katie (11th-grader Justin Buck’s mom) and Elizabeth (10th-grader James Barek’s mom), for providing transportation and helping make this trip possible. It was an unforgettable day of learning and connection!

🎹 Stella Talcott Performs at Carnegie Hall 🎶

Stella Talcott performed Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13 (“Pathétique”) at the American Protégé Winners Recital held at Carnegie Hall in New York City on May 24, 2025.

She was one of the winners in this year’s prestigious American Protégé Piano & Strings Competition. This marked Stella’s first piano competition, making the honor of performing at such a historic and revered venue even more meaningful. She was thrilled to share the stage with so many talented young musicians from around the world.
