President Column

Here we are at the beginning of August already. The year is flying by. This coming Sunday will be Rev. Matthew’s first service as our new minister. We recently began a new fiscal year and Rev. Matthew, the staff and the Board are deep into planning and preparing for the year.

Those of you who have been at MVUU for a while know we have social justice activities, stewardship campaigning, fundraisers, and scheduled maintenance planning issues to do every year along with many other routine tasks. In addition, there are two unique events we are considering for the coming year. We are working with a committee headed by Anne Tatum to plan a building dedication/open house where we will invite the community to come and get to know us. Another important event is the installation ceremony for our settled minister, Rev. Matthew.

We have also begun an initiative to rent the building to outside groups to help with fundraising. The building is beginning to get used for by congregants for weddings, memorials services, book club, and committee meetings. Our able Administrator Erin Chadwell is available to answer your questions about scheduling and use of the building. The mission and vision for MVUU are beginning to come into focus!

UU the Vote

When we organize, we build power in our communities for justice, accountability, and healing. In the last two years, UU the Vote has built new networks of spiritual and political communities to #VoteLove and #DefeatHate. With UU the Vote 2022 we’re organizing on the state and local levels to fight for fair elections, advance voting rights, protect abortion access, and resist the targeting and criminalization of Black, Indigenous, and people of color communities.

There is so much at stake in the 2022 midterm elections. Together, our communities can address the current threats to our democracy and human dignity. Download our guide to get started.

You can also help strengthen voter protection efforts by volunteering as a poll observer. Poll observers monitor how an election is administered and report issues so that they can be handled in a timely manner. For example, if a disabled voter requests that a ballot be brought to their car, but a poll worker refuses or forgets, you would be able to report that issue so that it is handled and the voter can participate in curbside voting. Poll observers are needed for early vote and on Election Day. Sign up to learn more here or email Mariah.
