Luncheon Lecture explores Leadership group's service project supporting child care

Hear what the Leadership Little Traverse Class of 2023-2024 is working on at this Luncheon at North Central Michigan College (NCMC) at 11:30 a.m. Friday, January 26. The Child Care Initiative (CCI) at the college is a comprehensive and community-driven effort to address the undersupply of child care in Emmet County. Launched in 2022 with support from key foundations, the initiative envisions a high-quality, accessible early care and education system supported through community connections.

In this Luncheon Lecture, Leadership Little Traverse Class of 2023-24 will share a brief overview of the organization and what led the group to choose the CCI as their community service project. Jennifer Wixson will then share findings from Phase 1 of the initiative. In this phase, a team led by Wixson conducted thorough research and collected community input through surveys, focus groups and interviews. This phase identified five key impact areas: Affordability, Accessibility, Capacity, Workforce Opportunities, and Quality of care. Proposed evidence and community-based innovations were carefully vetted for impact and feasibility.

Center for the Arts hosts comedian Kermet Apio

Returning to the Great Lakes Center for the Arts on Friday, January 19th is comedian Kermet Apio. He was a fan favorite last summer when he opened for comedian Brian Regan, so we've invited him back to kick off the New Year. Raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, Kermet has called Seattle, Washington, home since college. Kermet, a self-proclaimed playful procrastinator, broke into the comedy scene in the late 90s.

After that first open mic night at the Comedy Underground in Seattle, Kermet was hooked and soon ditched the security of a 9-to-5 to embrace performing and making audiences laugh full-time.

In the years since that leap of faith, Kermet took first place at the 2009 Great American Comedy Festival, appeared on the small screen and over the airwaves, and performed in almost all 50 states, plus three Canadian provinces – not bad, eh? Get ready to laugh away the calories gained over the fun holiday season. Tickets are now available.

Foundation scholarship applications now open

If you are a student in Emmet County graduating this spring and planning to continue your education this fall, the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation invites you to peruse the variety of scholarship opportunities available.

The Community Foundation is now accepting applications for a total of 49 scholarships, available for students who will be attending community college, university, or trade and vocational programs in the 2024-25 academic year. Scholarships are available for non-traditional students, homeschool students, and adults continuing their education. Application deadline is Friday, March 1, and more information is available here.
