A message from Rev Tim

Religious Life Sunday - January 22nd

Do you know that we have nuns, monks, sisters, brothers, and friars in the Episcopal Church and throughout the worldwide Anglican Communion? This Sunday - the third Sunday after Epiphany - is observed as "Religious Life Sunday" in the Episcopal Church. On this particular Sunday each year, we celebrate and give thanks to God for our vowed religious communities and the faithful Episcopalians who serve the church and the world as members of these communities.

Religious communities in The Episcopal Church include monastic communities, whose members live together under a rule of life and under vows such as poverty, chastity, and obedience. “Religious life” also includes dispersed Christian communities whose members are from all walks of life, who have jobs, who live in their own homes, some with families, and who live under religious vows.

In our congregation at the Church of the Advent, we are blessed by the presence and ministry of two vowed members of religious communities. Sister Jackie Fossler is a member of the Anamchara Fellowship, and our rector (Rev. Tim) is a member of the Fellowship of St. John the Evangelist. This Sunday, during our 10:15 service, Sr. Jackie will share her own experience as a sister living and serving under religious vows.

Welcome to a Life of Faith in the Episcopal Church

Do you have questions about the Episcopal Church? Do you wonder about some of Advent’s worship practices? Unsure about terms like laity, diocese, and unction? Answers to these questions and so much more are covered in the book Welcome to a Life of Faith in the Episcopal Church by Megan Castellan. Please borrow one of the six copies found in the back of the church, read it, and return it for another parishioner to enjoy.

Bible Study

Exploring of our Christian Roots; Growing our Christian Lives

Wednesdays,

10am – 11:30am

via Zoom

The group continues to use “The Complete Gospels,” but has started exploring some of the non-Canonical writings in that book. We have read “The Gospel of Mary,” and are now beginning the “Infancy Gospel of James” and plan to read the “Infancy Gospel of Thomas” after that. Although not part of the Canon, these stories influenced the early Christian communities in their respect for Mary (James) and the path the child Jesus took to becoming the adult we meet in the Canonical Gospels (Thomas).

Partnerships in Ministry (PIM-Outreach) has been busy these last few weeks and want to let you know how the CONGREGATION at Advent is responsible for our success!

  • Advent has already donated several baskets of greatly needed items for the inpatients and several baskets for the outpatients with the Veteran’s Administration. Thank you to Larry Hess for securing a $200 gift card donation from the Kennett Square Walmart to the Coatesville VA Medical Center and for continuing to support this ongoing ministry.

  • We will again be filling 50 first aid kits for children all over the world who need medical care, but for various circumstances are unable to seek medical help.  This is organized by ProjectCURE, and we will fill these bags in January.  Stay tuned for more details to come.

  • Advent’s own Dick Sanford began an organization several years ago to help children, whom had no articles of clothing to keep warm. He actually began organizing at Advent for donation coats, and then began a non-profit organization to make and donate NEW coats for children all over the country. Please visit the narthex to get a pre-addressed envelope to make a donation.

Advent will be hosting American Red Cross blood drives throughout 2023. See the dates below through March and use the link to schedule a donation should you desire.
