In an article published in
Principal Magazine from January/February, authors Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey, and Olivia Amador suggested asking students these three questions:
-
What are you learning today?
-
Why are you learning that?
-
How will you know whether you’ve learned it?
The authors state that if most students have good answers to these questions, the school has high
instructional clarity. With this goal in mind, teachers work toward helping students know
what they are meant to learn and
why they are meant to learn it. Then, we need to help students understand
how they will know when they have achieved their learning goals and begin to apply their knowledge to a variety of new contexts. It’s a wonderful journey, and we are grateful to be sharing it with your sons and daughters!
Yours truly, Brad

Book Editor Kristin Swan
Visits Fifth Grade
|
Kristin Swan, book editor and parent of sixth grader Henry Swan, visited the fifth grade class to kick off their editing and publishing unit. She came with many examples of books that she has edited and brought to publishing, and taught the class about what goes in to a published book. Her vast experiences and wide knowledge base were inspiring. Thank you, Kristin!

Applying What Students Learn for Greater Impact
|
Ultimately, schools should be judged not on what their students learn, but on the impact of their students’ learning. To create a more impactful environment, students deserve ample opportunity to apply what they have learned to new situations and this knowledge should help them make sense of the world.
