We have 1,422 Reasons to be Thankful

In honor of Volunteer Appreciation Week, we celebrate the 1,422 FODAC volunteers whose selfless dedication has enhanced our mission to help people with disabilities in Georgia and beyond. An incredible 14,700 volunteer hours have been contributed to FODAC in the past year. This results in significant cost savings and allows us to allocate more donated funds towards serving clients.

Volunteer Spotlight

Charlie repairs the leg of a rollator using one of the thousands of small equipment parts he has organized into 112 separate containers.

Meet Charlie Whitt, who has volunteered weekly for the past 8 years. Charlie’s primary focus is repairing and rebuilding mobility equipment after it’s been donated. His job may include replacing a wheel on a pediatric wheelchair, adding new brakes to a rollator, or exchanging a stripped screw for a new one. He provides dozens of repairs in a day that will help people to gain independence and mobility. “The most rewarding part of my job is knowing that a piece of equipment I repair can make a positive difference in someone’s quality of life,” said Charlie. He is also FODAC’s grill master. He and his wife, Susan, prepare burgers & hot dogs once a month for lunch on Fridays for volunteers and staff. He also volunteers his cooking skills for fundraising events, like the upcoming Run, Walk, ‘n’ Roll on May 3rd.

Empowering Isabella

After surgery for hip dysplasia, 5-year-old Isabella needed a specialized pediatric walker. When her parents learned that it would take several months for insurance to approve the medical item, they realized they couldn’t bear to delay their daughter’s recovery. Isabella’s father called FODAC from the hospital to seek help. He was relieved to talk to Bryan, FODAC’s Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant. He said, “Bryan is very proactive, and he understands the pain parents go through trying to navigate the healthcare system.  He called us back in a few hours and told us he had a walker for us. He gave us hope that day.”
