Do You Know An #OrcaHero?
|
|
Happy Puget Sound Starts Here Month! P
uget Sound Starts Here Month is a great way for you to connect, educate and empower yourself, your friends and your community to take simple actions to help Puget Sound and the orcas that swim there.
This year’s theme is
Orca Health Starts Here!
This highlights the fact that orca recovery starts with clean water and good habitat.
To help celebrate, we want to recognize all of the #OrcaHeroes out there, those people or groups who are doing positive things in their communities to protect water quality. Do you know a person or group who deserves recognition? Recognizing someone as an #OrcaHero is easy! Simply follow these steps:
- Post about your #OrcaHero on Facebook or Instagram.
- Include the name of the person or group, the city where they live or work, and a few sentences on what they are doing to prevent stormwater pollution.
- Include a photo of them in action (with their permission).
- Tag @PugetSoundStartsHere and make sure to use the hashtag #OrcaHero.

"Free" Latex Paint Recycling Coming to Washington
|
|
A
bill recently passed the Washington State Legislature which would allow people to drop off old latex paint at paint stores and other retailers for free. As part of this program, a small fee will be added to each gallon of new paint sold at retail stores, appearing as a line item on receipts. This fee goes to a 3rd party nonprofit organization associated with paint manufacturers. This program is scheduled to become operational next fall.
But, in the meantime, latex paint can be recycled at
Northshore Ace Hardware
for a fee, which will be recycled into new paint through
GreenSheen
. Residents may also continue to solidify latex paint and throw away in the trash. Oil-based paint can continue to be disposed of at the
Auburn Hazardous Wastemobile
.

Over 1,500 Coho Salmon Released Into The Hylebos
|
|
This year's Storming the Sound With Salmon Release Event was a huge success! Over 1,000 students from Federal Way Public Schools visited West Hylebos Wetlands Park.
Students released their salmon fry
, which they have been raising in their schools since December, into the Hylebos, and participated in hands-on learning activities led by local environmental organizations. They learned about everything from salmon's role in the food chain, to orca recovery efforts, to the obstacles that salmon face as they migrate from freshwater to Puget Sound.
Big thanks to our sponsors Puget Sound Energy and the King County Wastewater Treatment Division for helping to fund the Release Event!

|
And thank you to our lunch sponsors, Subway, Chick-fil-A, and Jimmy John's, for helping to feed our many volunteers and presenters.
