(1) Equity Advocate for Faculty Searches Information Session
 – Monday, February 3 (Faculty & Staff)
From Sarah Welch, HR & Equity Advocate Planning Committee

Faculty and staff are invited to attend an information session on Monday, February 3, Noon–12:50 p.m. in Shouse 315 to learn about a new equity advocate program. Participants will become familiar with the role of equity advocates, specially trained members of faculty search committees who promote practices that mitigate bias and ensure fair treatment. Those interested in pursuing training will commit to two in-person workshops and two online modules in February and March 2020. Although not all equity advocates will have the opportunity to serve on a faculty search committee, they will become effective champions of inclusive excellence across the MGH Institute community. Register for the information session.

(2) Spring Faculty Book Group (Faculty)
From Tony Sindelar, Office of the Provost

Faculty Book Group will read Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning by James Lang and will meet on Thursdays, Noon–1:00 p.m., on January 30, February 20, and March 19. In Small Teaching, James Lang presents a strategy for improving student learning with a series of modest but powerful changes that make a big difference—many of which can be put into practice in a single class period. These strategies are designed to bridge the chasm between primary research and the classroom environment in a way that can be implemented by any faculty in any discipline, and even integrated into pre-existing teaching techniques. Books will be provided. Limited spots are available. Register.

(3) American Public Health Association LGBTQ Health Caucus
– Call for Abstracts and Reviewers (Institute Wide)
From Dr. Kimberly Truong, Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The American Public Health Association LGBTQ Health Caucus is accepting abstracts for the upcoming meeting being held October 24-28 in San Francisco, CA. Abstracts focused on any aspect of LGBTQ public health will be considered. This year, abstracts are especially welcome related to activism/community organizing and LGBTQ health; the health of Indigenous and Two-Spirit LGBTQ people; the health of LGBTQ people of color; the impact of social policies and political climates on LGBTQ health; LGBTQ health and health care in San Francisco; methodological issues in LGBTQ health research; and the reproductive health of LGBTQ people. The abstract deadline is Thursday, February 20.

A call for reviewers is also open and that deadline is February 10. Reviewing abstracts takes little time commitment and is a great way to contribute to LGBTQ health research. It's also an item to add to your CV to both demonstrate your involvement in a professional society and to show your LGBTQ health expertise. Everyone is welcome to apply (e.g., students, staff, postdocs, faculty) and you don't need to have previously attended APHA or be a member.
