A message from the Office of Global Engagement
The UNMC Office of Global Engagement greeted five visitors from Ukraine on campus learning about disaster medicine from Sept. 26-29. The visitors toured several areas on campus.

Forty-nine new international students from 17 countries were welcomed to UNMC in August. An in-person, two-day International Student Orientation was organized by the OGE staff. We are very happy to have these students on campus and look forward to learning more about them. The OGE staff is here to help the students have a successful time at UNMC.

Also, several activities including a Husker football watch party and trip to the Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo have been held so far this fall for our new international students. Photos are included in the newsletter.

We congratulate Nidhi Dwivedi, a graduate student, who was elected the 2022-23 global engagement liaison for student senate.

Five Ukraine visitors were at UNMC from Sept. 26-30. The purpose of the visit was to become familiar with the organizational structure of national and regional disaster medicine systems, study of mechanisms for responding to emergencies, involvement of related services, and principles of developing a disaster medicine network and regulations.

The Ukrainians had the opportunity to meet with Chancellor Jeffrey Gold, MD, as well as visit with leaders from the Davis Global Center, Department of Emergency Medicine, Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, Global Center for Health Security, and Maurer Center for Public Health.

A Husker football game watching party was held for Nebraska's first game of the season, which took place in Ireland. Attendees enjoyed typical football game food including hotdogs and hamburgers.
New international students visited the Henry Doorly Zoo Sept. 17. Students enjoyed their time viewing all of the animals at the zoo.
In the coming months, planned events include a UNO hockey game and a shopping trip to the Nebraska Crossing Outlets.

More than 125 international students and scholars attended the welcome lunch and ambassador appreciation, which was hosted by the office of global engagement Sept. 7. Jane Meza, PhD, addressed the group and welcomed them to campus. To show appreciation for the global ambassadors for their time and dedication, they were gifted with red UNMC frisbees.
