Saint John the Baptist Catholic School Newsletter
Dear SJB Families,
Happy Fall Break! It is that time of year when we begin to construct our Hallowtide display. Did you know Halloween has significant Catholic roots? The name Halloween comes from All Hallows Eve which is the vigil before All Saints Day on November 1. All Hallows Eve, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day–these three days taken together are the “Days of the Dead,” a triduum of feasts also called Allhallowtide, Hallowtide, or Hallowmas. Different cultures celebrate these feasts in various ways. The Mexican Day of the Day was made famous in Disney’s Encanto.
We are, once again, going to celebrate Hallowtide as a school this year by displaying pictures of saints and our departed loved ones. (See the picture below of last year's display). If you would like to participate - please send in a photo of a family member with your child. Please label the back of the photo so we can make sure to get it back to you. These pictures will be on display from now until Thanksgiving Break. We hope to encourage students to pray for the dead during these very holy days!

Virtue of the Week - Generosity
Generosity is related to the cardinal virtue of Justice.
Definition: Giving of oneself in a willing and cheerful manner for the good of others.
Generosity in Practice:
- When someone asks something of me, I give it cheerfully.
- I frequently dedicate my money, time, and attention to others.
- I make time for others.
-
I offer help before it is asked..

Saintly Example- Saint Giuseppe Moscati
Giuseppe Moscati was an Italian doctor in the early 1900s. He worked hard to get to know his patients personally and bring them back to the sacraments as well as to physical health. Often he would not accept payment from his poor patients, or he would secretly slip their money back to them with their medicine so as not to embarrass them. Dr. Moscati also trained younger doctors to be generous in caring for both the emotional and spiritual needs of their patients.

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 9:6-8
“The point is this: he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that you may always have enough of everything and may provide in abundance for every good work.”
| | | |
Prayer
Dear Jesus,
All I have is from You and belongs to You. Thank You for blessing me with so much. Please help me notice ways I can be generous today and make my life a gift to others.
Amen.

Snacks and Coffee for Teachers
Each year HASA organizes parents to bring snacks and coffee for the teachers. It is so very appreciated! If you would be willing to volunteer for a week, please see the signup link below.
You may bring the snacks any day during the week you have signed up. If you are wanting to bring in coffee for the teachers, the coffee maker uses both ground coffee and nespresso pods. We have currently been purchasing ground coffee solely from a Catholic-owned coffee company named Guadalupe Roastery. If you are able, we would love to continue to support them by buying ground coffee directly from them. To help make purchasing easier, link to Guadalupe Roastery's website (Use code StJohn for 12% of Nicaraguan coffee) and a link for where to buy the nespresso pods are linked below. This is just an example of the nespresso pods - any brand of these type will work with the machine.
Thank you!
