Upcoming Service for the Lord's Day

21st Sunday after Pentecost

Sunday, October 18, 2026 ~ 10:30 a.m.

Preacher: Rev. Leslie Roper

Sermon: Serve One Another

Scripture Lessons:

Psalm 24 and 1 Peter 4:1-10

A Note from Pastor Leslie

Unsarcastically, I’m fairly convinced that I was predestined to be a Presbyterian. My parents joined Central Presbyterian Church in Fort Smith literally the Sunday before I was born. I was ordained as an elder in high school, attended a Presbyterian related college, worked for the denomination for two years before attending a Presbyterian seminary to be ordained as a Presbyterian minister. Along the way, I met my very Presbyterian husband who was also the son of a Presbyterian pastor. There is almost nothing about me that is not Presbyterian.

And yet, there are things that I appreciate about other faith traditions. I have long said that, if it weren’t for my deep love of and belief in Jesus, I would make a good adherent to the Jewish faith. As Christians, and particularly as Presbyterian Christians, we are really good at thinking about our faith. The Jewish tradition is really good at embodying faith, and that’s an area that I have been intentional about cultivating in my own life of faith. And I am better for it.

The deeply held and long-standing religious tradition of the Roman Catholic church has always felt like a mixed bag to me. There is danger, bordering on idolatry, in exalting humans and human organizations. But there is also a lot of beauty in the power of tradition, and there is so much that we have to learn from those who have come before us.

In the Roman Catholic tradition, today is the feast day of St. Teresa of Avila. One of my favorite quotes is regularly attributed to St. Teresa’s writings and, in its poetic form, goes, in part, like this:

Christ has no body but yours,

No hands, no feet on earth but yours,

Yours are the eyes with which he looks

Compassion on this world,

Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,

Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world.

In so many ways, the walk of faith would be easier were we to live in a time when Jesus walked the earth. To have sat on that hillside as the loaves and fishes fed the multitude, to have witnessed the blind man being healed and the little girl raised, to have heard Jesus first hand- all of those would have been incredible experiences. And ones that we will never know. But St. Teresa reminds us, in words that echo Paul’s letters to the church at Corinth, that we are the body of Christ. You and I, and all those who profess to follow Jesus, we are Christ’s body here on earth.

This week, I have received hugs that I knew were Christ’s body holding me tight. I have watched hands and feet literally pick up those who need help, knowing it was Jesus offering that support. I have heard words of compassion offered that came through human mouths, but were straight from God’s heart. You, each and every one of you, ARE Christ’s body in this world. It’s a big job. And one that you are up for! I can’t wait to see you on Sunday.

Birthday Sunday

This Sunday, October 18, we will honor our members and friends celebrating birthdays in the month of October. Following worship, we invite members, friends and guests to the Fellowship Hall for Birthday Cake.

All Saints Day - Sunday, November 1

All Saints Day is a day to remember all those who have died in the past year. If you have someone you would like to have remembered, contact the church office (501-624-5646 or office@firstpreshotsprings.org) by Wednesday, October 28.

The Caring Place Luncheon

The Caring Place of Hot Springs offers daily respite for caretakers of adults with dementia or developmental disability by being a safe (and caring) place for those adults to spend their days, giving their caretakers a much needed break. Your youth volunteer there almost every summer. Your mission committee has contributed financially. You also have the opportunity to support this organization! The Caring Place will hold their annual Ladies Luncheon on Tuesday, October 27, and reservations are now open. Betsy Broyles Arnold will speak about the resource she and her father (legendary Arkansas coach Frank Broyles) designed to support those who love and care for individuals with Alzheimer's disease.

Attention Women of our Church!

Have you given your donation (tithe) for the missions outside of Garland County and for the expenses of projects by the Sew Whats, postage, and other items? We donate to Vera Lloyd to buy Christmas presents for children ($1,000.00). Nationally and world-wide we donate to the Mission, Birthday and Thank Offerings ($900.00). Please help us help others by making your check out to Presbyterian Women and giving it to Sally Pierce, PW treasurer or the Church Office. Thank you in advance for your support! FYI - First Presbyterian Church in Jonesboro received a Thank Offering Grant ($5,100) to start a Food Bank in 2027.

Family Night Supper "Oktoberfest"

We didn't have any rowdy bench dancing, but we did have some beautiful music sung by Laura Lee Williard. We also had some traditional German fare featuring hearty and comforting dishes accompanied by sauerkraut and fresh-baked bread.

Our next Family Night Supper is our annual Thanksgiving Dinner. Plan to join us on Wednesday, November 11!

Spa City Youth Spreads Pumpkin Spice!

It may have still been 90 degrees outside, but the Spa City Youth kicked fall off by decorating pumpkins! We are so grateful for the faith and the relationships that continue to grow in that group.

Bible Trivia

Bible Trivia is a fun way to review scripture, explore biblical characters, and learn key facts to boost your knowledge of the Bible.

Every other week we will give you a trivia question with the answer given the following week. Tell us what you believe is the answer, and why, by sending it to office@firstpreshotsprings.org.
