Powderpuff, Ice Cream, and PIE!

PIE was busy last week, providing sweet relief in the form of an ice cream social for students to celebrate the end of the first quarter, and then PIE was on hand at the annual Powderpuff game on Friday to hand out Outshine ice pops to students and faculty! The ice pops went so fast on the beautiful sunny day we don't have pictures to share, but enjoy a few from the Powderpuff game down below! The students had a great time!

At the ice cream social on Thursday and Friday, the Food Allergy Awareness Club had a special table set up for students with milk allergies and also for students who wanted a sugar-free treat instead of ice cream. What a great idea thanks to Beatrice McCrary'28 and Molly Janech '28

Honoring the Memory of Mr. Tyson McCormick

As Mr. Perlmutter shared in a recent email to parents, Mr. Tyson McCormick sadly passed away on Thursday, October 7. He dedicated the last 20 years to Academic Magnet High School, where he led the Summer Scholars freshman orientation program, was the Science Department Head, and organized and managed countless trips abroad. He was a National Board Certified Teacher and AMHS Teacher of the Year - he was a mentor and colleague, and friend to many. His passion for science, travel, and his love for his students, defined a marked career.

He was academically motivated, and very involved with the youth of North Gate Baptist Church and the Boy Scouts of America. A graduate of Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School, Mr. McCormick completed undergraduate studies at the College of Charleston and a graduate degree at The Citadel. He was an educator for 27 years, beginning his career at Schroeder and CE Williams Middle Schools.

A Celebration of Life will take place Monday, November 17, 2025, from 4:30 pm - 7 pm at Founder’s Hall, located within CharlesTowne Landing in Charleston, SC.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider a tax-deductible contribution to fund the Tyson W. McCormick Raptor Explorer Award, a scholarship endowment established with the Academic Magnet Foundation to honor his legacy. Mr. McCormick believed in the transformative power of global experiences and cultural understanding. This fund will support students at Academic Magnet High School by providing financial assistance for participation in school-sponsored international trips. Learn more at www.RaptorExplorerAward.com. Alternatively, you may consider a memorial gift to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX or the National Brain Tumor Society.

The above was excerpted from Mr. McCormick's obituary. Read it in full at this link.

Students May Request Student Peer Tutoring from NHS

The following link below is the official Academic Magnet National Honor Society (NHS) internal tutoring request form. Students can fill out the form to request peer tutoring if they need help in any of their classes for the 2025-26 School Year. The form is posted on the school website under students/National Honor Society. Or you can view here at this link.

Completing this form with as many details as possible will allow NHS to match the student with a tutor (an AMHS NHS junior or senior).

Disclaimer from AMHS NHS Tutoring Committeee:

The most important thing to remember when signing up for tutoring is that the National Honor Society Tutoring Committee is completely student-led and student-run. This means that scheduling and availability is entirely up to the committee members. We do our absolute best to make the perfect match for your student as the request comes in, taking into consideration the student's needs and preferences. However, we can not guarantee that all preferences are filled. It is important to understand that because this committee runs on a volunteer basis, hours and the ability to commit to regular tutoring are restricted.

Please allow 3 to 5 days for AMHS NHS to respond to your tutoring request. We will try to make a pairing as quickly as possible, but submitting a request in advance gives us ample time to fulfill the request properly. For example, if you have a test on a Thursday, notify us by Monday or sooner that you would like to schedule a tutoring session. If you have a test on Monday, notify us by Wednesday of the previous week or sooner.
