Welcome to Spirit/Homecoming Week!
We are in the midst of our Spirit Week here at Langley. Activities were kicked off with our Pride Assembly last Friday. The Leadership students made a video which introduced the idea of why school spirit is so important. They also modeled the theme for each day. We will culminate our week with a pep rally on Thursday, football game on Friday, and dance on Saturday. Please encourage your students to participate in the themes and attend the activities.
We all believe that school is more than just what occurs in the classroom. We are lucky at Langley to have an energetic and enthusiastic student body and we want them to extend that energy and enthusiasm to all facets of student life. Encourage your child to join a club, play a sport, audition for a play, or engage in any of the other myriad things we have going on here.
Students should not feel the need to have a date
for the dance on Saturday. They can come in a group or by themselves. The dance is in the gym, and is not as formal as prom. Girls typically wear dresses, and boys wear ties, many with a suit or blazer. The dance is from
8-11 pm
and should be fun for the students; no adult can last more than 10 minutes because it's too loud.

TOY is FCPS' top honor in the teaching profession. The winner, finalists, and nominees are all recognized at the annual FCPS Honors awards ceremony. The winner receives the Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award from The Washington Post, and competes for the VA Dept of Education State Teacher of the Year Award.

Richard Whitehead has taught math classes ranging from Algebra 1 to
Calculus at Langley for the past 16 years.
After finishing graduate school, Mr. Whitehead started teaching Algebra in Mississippi over 20 years ago and in 1997 moved to Virginia to continue his teaching career. Two years, he later made the move to LHS where he has taught ever since.
Anyone who's had Mr. Whitehead can vouch for his laid-back, yet highly informative, style of teaching that puts a greater emphasis on understanding concepts than on busy work and extra assignments. Mr. Whitehead always makes the effort to ensure everyone understands all the lessons, and he is always available to any student who needs a little extra help.
When not teaching, Mr. Whitehead enjoys watching shows such as Game of Thrones and the Walking Dead; he is also an avid supporter of his alma mater Ole Miss. Mr. Whitehead

s interesting portrayal of math concepts has cemented him as a beloved teacher, while his helpful, funny nature has made him a treasured member of the Langley community. "I enjoy math because of the problem-solving aspect of it. Most of the time, there is a problem--or a puzzle--and in the end, you have an answer. It

Relay For Life of Langley-McLean is introducing a Lighting Ceremony on Nov 14, from 5-9 pm at Glen Echo National Park to give potential participants a taste of what our big event in May entails. Relay For Life has been mostly attended by students in the past, and we hope this will attract more parents and community members.
Participants purchase light bulbs in advance, and then at the ceremony, screw their bulb into a large board, and have their survivor announced. It's a great visual reminder for why we Relay and fight this terrible disease. An $11 bulb gives a cancer patient a free ride to and from lifesaving treatment, and a $22 bulb will do that for two patients!
Enjoy free dinner and music at the Lighting Ceremony! Can't

The
McLean HS PTSA is offering students the opportunity to take a practice version of the new SAT or the ACT on
Sat, Nov 14 from
9 am-1 pm at McLean HS cafeteria. This is a great opportunity for students to familiarize themselves with the SAT and ACT before taking the real test. One week after taking the practice test, participants will receive a detailed score report that
highlights their personal strengths and weaknesses.
The
registration fee is $20 and benefits the PTSA. Bring a check or cash on test day. Please register in advance
here. Scores are not reported to the school or any reporting agency.
Results are solely for the student's personal use. Students with IEPs can request the accommodation of a longer testing period.
