The session covered:
- How students’ online choices can have lasting consequences.
- Common social media risks and concerns for families.
- Ways parents can encourage safe, responsible digital habits.
I encourage parents of children of all ages to watch the recording of Parenting in the Age of Social Media at www.ccsd93.com/sm. Whether your child already uses social media or is years away from starting, the session offers useful information to help you prepare for conversations and decisions ahead.

The U.S. Surgeon General’s advisory on social media and youth mental health also offers helpful information for families. It highlights:
- Research linking more than three hours of daily social media use among adolescents with twice the risk of poor mental health outcomes, including symptoms of depression and anxiety.
- Steps families can take, such as creating a family media plan, setting aside technology-free time and modeling responsible online behavior.
These resources provide a starting point for considering how social media fits into your child’s life. Talking regularly about online experiences, establishing clear expectations and learning about the platforms children use can help families support thoughtful choices and healthy habits.
Thank you to Officers Jaffe and Andrejevic for sharing their expertise and supporting our students’ wellbeing, and to our families for taking part in this conversation.
