Goals
1. Learn statistics on the childhood obesity crisis and how using pedometers with children is a way to monitor their daily activity levels.
2. Understand the research on pedometer walking programs.
3. Learn tips to motivate students to move and get active using pedometers.
Course Description
The course is divided into 4 sections:
Section 1- This section is an overview of the childhood obesity crisis, how much exercise is enough, and briefly discusses running programs.
Section 2- This section looks at the research using pedometers with children. It explains the benefits of walking, individual goal setting, and how to create an 8-week walking program with minimal expense.
Section 3- This section provides tools to encourage walking. It includes making walking creative and fun through destination goals, step tracking websites, and physical activity tracking goals.
Section 4- This section is called pedometers 101. It provides suggestions about which pedometer to use with children, pedometer storage, and pedometer positioning specific to children.
Target Audience
The Pedometer Walking Program Training is designed to introduce administrators, teachers, substitute teachers, physical educators, parents, after-school personnel, and playground supervisors to the changes and strategies for implementing a school use of pedometers with children.
