Happy Monday Y'all!

I wanted to give you an update on my ridiculous cold that was like the never ending nose monsoon. Well, thank the Lord, I'm better. I'm a week late on updating y'all but here are the results to my experiment with the so called "snot stopper."

I took three capsules of sinatrol mid morning two Thursdays ago. I took them between meals because sinatrol contains bromelain, an anti-inflammatory pineapple extract, that breaks down proteins. Taking the pills away from meals made the bromelain enzymes work on breaking up the mucous proteins instead of food proteins.

I promise I'm shooting straight when I say I actually felt relief in my symptoms by mid afternoon. My nose was still running but I wasn't sneezing every 15 minutes anymore and I could feel the pressure in my nose dissipating. By that evening, I didn't sound like a pinch-nosed telephone operator from the 1950s anymore.

I'm about to fess up to why I took on this experiment in the first place (besides being miserable). Thursday night I took a plane to Colorado to go skiing for a long weekend with friends and family. I was desperate to not have my snot freezing to my face while I bombed down the Rockies.

This is me trying to hold an edge on my turn. The landscape photo in the header is my friend Beth and I "posing." We had one day of blue skies and sunshine with windy runs and one day of constant snow with awesome powder runs.

I would say, skiing in 10 degree weather for 2 days was the ultimate test for this stuff. I continued to take the three capsules in the mornings until Sunday, but by Friday morning I felt better than I had in weeks. Of course I was a little sniffly while we were on the mountain, but there is a big difference between blowing my nose once between powder runs on a cold day and plugging my nose with tissue paper in my little office at the OHW clinic (Yes, I do this in dire situations; I learned it from my father and it works. Don't judge.).

So, suffice to say, I now have a bottle of sinatrol waiting for if/when I come down with another cold or flu that I can't beat off quickly. But that brings me to my next experiment that I hope I won't have to do. Viracid. This is another supplement that contains natural ingredients, botanicals and nutrients that are supposed to skyrocket your immune system fighting off a cold, upper respiratory infection or flu. It is something you take when you start to feel the symptoms coming on.

I've listed some of the natural ingredients that are research-supported for immune support below. There is conflicting information and research about some nutrients like vitamin C for a cold, so hopefully this list gives you the most up to date info.

Have a great week y'all!

Maggie

Research-Based Nutrients for Immune System: i.e., The Stuff That Actually Works!

Vitamin C

  • Despite conflicting research, vitamin C has been shown to improve antimicrobial and natural killer cell function.

Zinc

  • Zinc has indisputably been shown to support immune health as a critical nutrient in many cell pathways.

Echinacea

  • Recent studies have found that echinacea can reduce the number and duration of cold episodes.

N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC)

  • Research clearly shows that NAC breaks the disulfide bonds of mucus glycoprotein. This results in a decrease of viscoelasticity of nasal mucus
Vitamin A
  • Vitamin A stimulates white blood cell function and improves immune barrier protection.

Berberine Sulfate

  • Berberine can metabolicly inhibit certain organisms, inhibit bacterial toxin formation, inhibit intestinal fluid accumulation and reduce inflammation.

Andrographis and Siberian Ginseng

  • Pharmacological studies of Andrographis suggest anti-inflammatory, antipyretic , antiviral, and immune stimulating properties.

  • A meta-analysis of seven double-blind studies was conducted on the efficacy of Andrographis.

  • Improves nasal secretion and soreness of throat

 Siberian Ginseng (Eleuthero Root)
  • 10 mg of Siberian Ginseng along with 85 mg of Andrographis were found to be effective against acute respiratory tract infections, improving throat and nose symptoms, headache and general fatigue.
Bromelain
  • The term bromelain refers to all the enzymes derived from pineapple fruit, leaves, and stems.
  • Bromelain has historically been used as a digestive aid, cleansing agent, wound healing, and as an anti-inflammatory.
  • Bromelain has been shown to stimulate statistically faster recovery from symptoms associated with sinusitis.
Vitamin D
  • We also know conclusively that vitamin D is necessary for immune function but we recommend you take vitamin D as a stand alone nutrient because the other health benefits are so critical as well.

I left this link in here in case anyone didn't have a chance to see the vitamins and supplements that OHW recommends as research-based nutrients with necessary health benefits.

Maggie's Foundation Supplement Recommendations for Long-Term Health and Disease Prevention

Check out the top three most important supplements everyone should take by clicking the link above. The research has proven the benefits hands down and the benefits are crucial for everyone to live well and age well.

Sinatrol
A comprehensive formula for sinus and respiratory support.
  • A Mayo Clinic study several years ago showed that most sinus related infections and upper respiratory tract infections 96% of the time are actually fungal and not bacterial. Sinatrol is designed to attack fungus making this product more effective than antibiotics for most people.
  • Sinatrol uses two clinically researched natural and safe ingredients : Andrographic paniculata and Siberian ginseng to support acute respiratory distress while supporting the immune system.
  • Sinatrol has natural ingredients to break down mucus (that's what I need right now!)
  • Sinatrol also has a traditional and safe blend of antimicrobial botanicals.
Viracid
Critical nutrition for Acute Immune Defense.

Basically, try this instead of downing zycam and vitamin C when you feel a cold or flu coming on.
  • Provides research proven vitamins to stimulate white blood cell function, natural killer cell function and immune barrier protection including: vitamins A and C and pantothenic acid, and zinc.
  • Viracid has synergistic blend of the botanical extracts black elderberry, astragalus, echinacea and andographis, used traditionally for their immune-modulating properties.
K Pax Pro
Promotes optimal cellular energy production to enhance immune function for acute and long-term conditions.

This is basically a multivitamin, antioxidant and immune support all in one bottle.
  • K*PAX Pro works by combining the benefit of key micronutrients and phytonutrients with physiologically active doses of Acetyl L-Carnitine, Lipoic Acid and N-Acetyl Cysteine shown to promote mitochondrial energy production.
  • Includes nutrients like green tea extract, resveratrol and broccoli seed extract.
