6 Health Benefits of Green Infrastructure
~ Being in nature is good for physical and mental health ~
On May 20th, 25 attendees of the Choose Clean Water Conference toured the recently completed green infrastructure project at MedStar Harbor Hospital . Collectively, the project treats five acres of impervious surface with14 stormwater facilities including: bioretention areas, bioswales, and rain gardens. Overall, the project team planted over 48,000 perennials, shrubs, and trees on the MSHH campus.

The stormwater facilities will filter five million gallons of stormwater each year, preventing pollutants from entering the Patapsco river. The jewel of this project goes beyond stormwater management – it is the healing garden which creates a natural space for staff, patients, and community members to connect with nature and one another.
Being in nature has many benefits for people's physical health and mental health. For example, it can:
  1. Improve heart health
  2. Boost immune function and healing
  3. Foster positive child development
  4. Increase mental health
  5. Help memory and focus, and
  6. Promote an active lifestyle.
