10 Reasons to Reduce your Inner Critic

1. You become much more pleasant to be around. The smaller your inner critic (toward yourself and others), the happier everyone feels around you. Significant others, family, and co-workers will thank you.

2. You'll feel physically better. Inner criticism carries an emotional resistance to it. This resistance creates stress. This stress leads to inflammation in the body. Inflammation makes you feel agitated and sick, and contributes to chronic conditions. (We'll move from an inner critic to observations and discernments, which don't have that emotional resistance).

3. We're here on this earth to release judgment anyway! That is part of the path. Anything you judge... you'll find yourself in that situation sooner or later, just so you can release that judgment. The shortcut is to release judgment first, so you don't have to go through all that.

4. We have 60,000 thoughts a day.

80% of our thoughts are negative.

76% of our thoughts per day are self-critical.

They can't all be correct, right?

5. In Buddhism, the inner critic is what keeps us from enlightenment. It turns nirvana into samsara.

6. Freedom from the inner critic has been my way of thriving in very competitive environments (including Harvard Law School and one of the most competitive law firms in the world). Whatever environment you find yourself in, hope it will be yours too.

7. After doing this work, you'll have more energy. One of the things that drains energy is the inner critic!

8. As you do this class, your pre-frontal cortex – associated with higher order brain functions such as awareness, concentration and decision-making – becomes thicker.

9. Your amygdala, the part of your brain responsible for FREAKING OUT, gets smaller.

10. It's the journey toward treating yourself with kindness. Less inner critic is more mental clarity. Also, it's fun!

The Inner Critic is a habit of the mind that’s done a lot of damage. Not objective or helpful, more of an attack that threatens us. It leaves no space to feel, no space to breathe, no space to inquire. And it’s not that interesting, if you really look at it.

Let's reduce our inner critic together. We begin soon.
