Community Outreach

We thought it was pretty cool that Collin, Zach, Chloe, Meredith and Olivia came to visit BAC as part of their Project Based Learning Alpena High School class. The mission was to learn about how BAC operates. They met with Chief Operating Officer Lara Torres, Fitness Director Courtney Holmes and Communications Director Sarah Morrison. They toured the club, went over stats and demographics, got insight into our fitness offerings and learned more about who BAC is as a business by asking great questions that they had prepared ahead of time. They even got to view a "60 Second Inspiration" story to see the huge impact fitness can have on a real life member of their community.

Shakeology of the Month
PUMPKIN PIE SHAKEOLOGY
It tastes like dessert, but acts like a multivitamin!

Why Shakeology?
We all struggle with food prep and getting all the nutrients we need in life every day. Shakeology solves both of those problems.  It literally fills the gaps in our daily nutrition. We still advocate eating clean, colorful, whole foods for your daily meals. Shakeology is a multivitamin in a meal.

It is quick, convenient and filled with vitamins, minerals, superfoods, probiotics, prebiotics, digestive enzymes, amino acids, antioxidants and protein. It is NOT a diet shake or a quick fix. It is whole food nutrition.

Need Shakeology at home for YOUR family? FREE shaker cup with purchase!

Healthy Living Recipe

BRAISED CHICKEN AND MEDITERRANEAN VEGETABLES BOWL
This meal is easy enough for a weeknight and could be adapted to the slow-cooker and is gluten free. Am I hitting any of your boxes? Best of all, it delivers a lot of lean protein and veggies without having to serve a cold salad. Autumn is here and sometimes you want to eat like it. Enjoy!
2 bone-in chicken breast, skin on (optional)
2 TBSP oil or butter
16 oz. Baby Bella mushrooms, cleaned and sliced
10 oz. (approx.) sundried tomatoes, dehydrated
1 15 oz. canned artichoke hearts, drained
1 15 oz. Cannellini Beans, drained and rinsed
2 cups vegetable or chicken broth (low sodium)
½ cup sliced fresh basil
Salt and pepper for seasoning

Method:
Heat oven to 400 degrees. Trim extra fat and skin from the chicken breast, leaving a thin swath. Salt and pepper the chicken. In a large Dutch Oven, add 1 TBSP of oil and heat to medium high. Add the chicken to the pot, skin side down. Leave for 5 minutes without moving the meat. Flip with tongs and leave for one minute. Remove chicken to plate. Add the other tablespoon of oil or butter, mushrooms and sundried tomatoes. Reduce heat to medium and stir once a minute with tongs until the mushroom begins to release liquids. Add artichoke hearts, beans and deglaze pan with all the broth. Turn off heat, nestle chicken on top of the veggie mixture. Cover with lid and move to oven for 20 minutes or until an instant read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the chicken reads 165 degrees.
Warm up a couple wide rimmed bowls, plate half the veggies and chicken per bowl and sprinkle basil over the final dish. Serves two adults.

October 2019
Our 10th anniversary of helping our community lose weight and get fit together

We are excited to cheer on 30+ teams of people in Alpena who are supporting each other in working out, eating healthy, having fun and losing weight this fall. We officially kick off on Sunday, October 6th (it's not too late to join! Call BAC!)

Our annual community weight loss competition has helped transform lives for a decade. This can be just the jumpstart someone needs to set a goal, make a plan and get to work. Creating healthy habits is easier when others in your life are on board too. These teams encompass friends, family, coworkers and even strangers meeting for the first time! We see people transform. They learn to take control of their health and go on to great things.

From years past, we've celebrated people starting strong with Thinner Winner and keeping it going. They kick medications to the curb, have more energy and feel better. We've had participants continue their journeys and lose 50 or even 100 pounds. We can't wait to see what is in store for us this year. We are on a mission to help our community lose at least 1,000 pounds and inches and discover a new love of life!

TIPS FROM NUTRITION EDUCATOR AMANDA FREELAND
As parents we have a lot of responsibilities when it comes to our kids. One of the things that can feel challenging and overwhelming is knowing how to feed our kids well. Each child is different and kids can be picky. It can be difficult to make one meal that everyone in your house will love that also happens to be nutritious.

I believe that big food companies have made it even more difficult for us to understand what is nutritious or not for our kids because the marketing on certain foods is very deceiving. Boxed foods advertise they are healthy because they have vitamin D or C when really the sugars and food colorings in those products do more harm than the vitamins do good.  Did you know that big food companies actually pay scientists to study our brain and to then make flavors, textures and smells that will addict us to their foods and keep us coming back for more?  It's sad when you think about it and something we can pay more attention to.

Here are some great guidelines for knowing if you are feeding your kids, and yourself, well:
1: Is it from the earth? Did it come from a plant or an animal? Is it colorful?
2: Does it have added sugars? Nutrition labels are now showing added sugars along with the total sugars in the food products. Children should not have more than 16 grams of added sugar in their day.
3: Is it nutritious? Is the food they are eating going to give them fuel to think, play, learn and grow? All food can fit into one of two categories, nutritious or non-nutritious. As long as we are eating nutritious as least 80% of the time we are doing well.
4: Are they drinking mostly water? Sugary juices and soda can have adverse health effects if used daily and for an extended period of time. Some of those health effects include a higher risk of diabetes, stomach inflammation, slowing neurological connection and weight gain.

Our kids deserve to grow up as healthy as possible. We can help them by talking about why it's important to put healthy food into our body. We can help them by leading the way and choosing to eat well to be great role models for them as they grow.

TAKE ACTION OVER YOUR NUTRITION:
