Dear Friends,

Ten years ago I was the Director of Program Services when our late Executive Director, Miriam Mahan, came to me with a question: Could The Care Service add a Street Outreach program?

Since our founding in 1981, The Care Service has always found ways to reach people experiencing homelessness, bringing food, water, and essential supplies across the tri-county area. However, most resources were centered around families with children, while most people experiencing homelessness we encountered were single adults who too often fall through the cracks.

In 2016, we worked to formalize the Street Outreach Program with greater structure and reach. Three days a week, outreach workers hit the streets to deliver basic life-saving supplies, connect individuals to resources, and work toward the goal of permanent housing. Ten years in, I couldn’t be more proud of what this team has accomplished by showing up for people whom others overlook.

Best regards,

Meet James

A severe stroke left James unable to work. The loss of income and medical bills led to an eviction. With no family to turn to for help, James had no choice but to sleep in a tent in the woods.
