Jazz Sunday — Sacrament of Communion

January 3, 2021

10 a.m.

Welcoming Covenant

In the name of God and Jesus Christ, the Hingham Congregational Church welcomes all who seek to know and worship God, and invites everyone to join in our mission through participation and leadership of the congregation.

As a community of faith, we take seriously the biblical call to love God and our neighbors as ourselves, and recognize that, although we are many members, we are one.

❖   We celebrate the uniqueness of everyone.

❖   We rejoice in our diversity of views and understandings of our shared faith.

❖   We affirm relationships based on love, commitment, and mutual respect.

❖   As is stated in our by-laws, we strive for righteousness, justice and peace.

It is with this spirit and the love of God that we openly welcome all persons, inclusive of every race, ethnicity, class, age, gender, physical or mental ability, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, and inclusive of any others, to journey with us as we move forward with the work of this church in the world.

Prayer of Confession and Lord’s Prayer

God of starlight, shine your love into the dimness of our lives.

Preoccupied with ourselves, we express our opinions without listening to each other. We ignore the voices of the oppressed and those who are held back by structural racism. May your love give us ears to hear and a renewed resolve to listen well this year…

(silent prayer)

Our Father* who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen.

*HCC recognizes the power of language, while also respecting traditional practices. We acknowledge a God that transcends all human ideas of gender, identity, and ability. Please pray in whatever way is most comfortable to you.

Hymn                                    We Three Kings of Orient Are                               PH 143

We three kings of Orient are, Bearing gifts we traverse a far

Field and fountain, moor and mountain, Following yonder star.

O star of wonder, star of night, Star with royal beauty bright,

Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to thy perfect light.

Boarn a King on Bethlehem’s plain, Gold I bring to crown him again,

King forever, ceasing never Over us all to reign.

O star of wonder, star of night, Star with royal beauty bright,

Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to thy perfect light.

Frankincense to offer have I, Incense owns a deity nigh;

Prayer and praising, all men raising, Worship him, God on high.

O star of wonder, star of night, Star with royal beauty bright,

Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to thy perfect light.

Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume Breathes a life of gathering gloom:

Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, Sealed in the stone-cold tomb.

O star of wonder, star of night, Star with royal beauty bright,

Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to thy perfect light.

Glorious now behold him arise, King and God and Sacrifice;

Alleluia, alleluia! Sounds through the earth and skies.

O star of wonder, star of night, Star with royal beauty bright,

Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to thy perfect light.

 Prayer of Thanksgiving (unison)

Thank you, God, for life in the Spirit of Jesus; for love that cannot

die; for peace the world cannot give; for joy in the company of

friends; for the glory of creation; for the mission of justice you have

made our own. Give us the gifts of this Holy meal: oneness of heart,

love for neighbors, forgiveness of enemies, the will to serve every

day, and life that never ends. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen
