Hingham Congregational Church,

United Church of Christ

Jazz Sunday — Sacrament of Communion

January 9, 2022

10 a.m.

Welcoming Covenant

In the name of God and Jesus Christ, the Hingham Congregational Church welcomes all who seek to know and worship God, and invites everyone to join in our mission through participation and leadership of the congregation.

As a community of faith, we take seriously the biblical call to love God and our neighbors as ourselves, and recognize that, although we are many members, we are one.

❖   We celebrate the uniqueness of everyone.

❖   We rejoice in our diversity of views and understandings of our shared faith.

❖   We affirm relationships based on love, commitment, and mutual respect.

❖   As is stated in our by-laws, we strive for righteousness, justice and peace.

It is with this spirit and the love of God that we openly welcome all persons, inclusive of every race, ethnicity, class, age, gender, physical or mental ability, sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, and inclusive of any others, to journey with us as we move forward with the work of this church in the world.

Order of Worship

Prelude      Not A Day Goes By                           Timo Shanko

We encourage you to take this opportunity to be in quiet prayer and reflection.

Welcome and Announcements

*Hymn                        Every Time I Feel the Spirit                        NCH #282

Every time I feel the Spirit moving in my heart I will

pray. Yes every time I feel the Spirit moving

in my heart I will pray. Up-on the mountain my God

spoke, out of God’s mouth came fire and smoke.  Looked all a

round me; looked so fine; I asked my God if all were mine.

Every time I feel the Spirit moving in my heart I will

pray. Yes every time I feel the Spirit moving

in my heart I will pray. Oh Jordan river, chilly and

cold, it chills the body, not the soul. There’s only

one train on this track; it runs to heaven, then right back.

Every time I feel the Spirit moving in my heart I will

pray. Yes every time I feel the Spirit moving

in my heart I will pray.

UCC Statement of Faith                                                                  NCH #885

We believe in you, O God, Eternal Spirit,

God of our Savior Jesus Christ and Our God,

and to your deeds we testify:

You call the words into being,

create persons in our own image,

and set before each one the ways of life and death.

You seek in holy love to save all people from aimlessness

         and sin.

You judge people and nations by your righteous will

         declared through prophets and apostles.

In Jesus Christ, the man of Nazareth, our crucified and

         risen Savior,

         you have come to us

         and shared our common lot,

         conquering sin and death

and reconciling the word to yourself.

You bestow upon us your Holy Spirit,

creating and renewing the church of Jesus Christ,

binding in covenant faithful people of all ages,

         tongues, and races.

You call us into your church

to accept the cost and joy of discipleship,

to be your servants in the service of others,

to proclaim the gospel to all the world

and resist the powers of evil,

to share in Christ’s baptism and eat at his table,

to join him in his passion and victory.

You promise to all who trust you

forgiveness of sins and fullness of grace,

courage in the struggle for justice and peace,

your presence in trial and rejoicing,

and eternal life in your realm which has no end.

Blessing and honor, glory and power be unto you. Amen

Prayer of Confession and Lord’s Prayer (unison)

Spirit of the Living God, we tend to be practical people. We forget that there are important realities beyond which we can see, touch, measure, buy, and control. We ignore much of which is below the surface. Please open our hearts and minds to the fresh winds your Spirit, which bring challenges, opportunities, and endless grace...

(silent prayer)

Our Father* who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen.

*Please feel free to pray as you wish. We respect tradition — and we welcome images of the Divine that are diverse and inclusive.

Musical Offering             I Want to Talk About You                 Billy Eckstine

Ministry of the Word

Scripture Reading: Acts 8:14-17                                              Steve Waynen

Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. The two went down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit (for as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus). Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

Prayer of Thanksgiving (unison)

Thank you, God, for life in the Spirit of Jesus; for love that cannot

die; for peace the world cannot give; for joy in the company of

friends; for the glory of creation; for the mission of justice you have

made our own. Give us the gifts of this Holy meal: oneness of heart,

love for neighbors, forgiveness of enemies, the will to serve every

day, and life that never ends. In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen

Hymn                                 Sweet. Sweet Spirit                                NCH #293

There’s a sweet, sweet Spirit in this place, and I

know that it’s the Spirit of the Lord: there are

sweet expressions on each face, and I

know they feel the presence of the Lord.

Sweet Holy Spirit, sweet heavenly Dove, stay right here

with us, filling us with your love; And for these blessings we

lift our hearts in praise. Without a doubt we’ll know that we have

been revived when we shall leave this place.

There are blessings you cannot receive till you

know that Spirit’s fullness and believe; you’re the

one to profit when you say, “I am

going to stay with Jesus all the way.”

Sweet Holy Spirit, sweet heavenly Dove, stay right here

with us, filling us with your love; And for these blessings we

lift our hearts in praise. Without a doubt we’ll know that we have

been revived when we shall leave this place.

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK:   STOP & SHOP RESTORE PROGRAM

While filling my fuel tank at a Stop and Shop gas station this morning, for the first time I noticed a sign calling attention to their RESTORE program. I checked it out, and suggest you might do so as well. With every gallon of gas purchased, S&S provides CARBON OFFSETS, investments in carbon reduction projects with $$$ going to local communities to plant more trees that suck up carbon dioxide.

Their link below explains the program, contains New Year’s Resolutions ideas as well, and much much more!! Even if you have made yours, it is hardly too late to add a few more resolutions aimed at caring for our Mother Earth. Welcome to 2022! And may we all renew our efforts every day to fight climate change and be kinder to our planet. Even small changes can help make a big difference!

And in 2022 always remember to-

“USE WISELY...”  HELP US CARE FOR OUR FRAGILE ENVIRONMENT BY REDUCING WASTE.

REDUCE -  REFUSE - REUSE - - REPAIR - RECYCLE - ROT (COMPOST)

The Work of Christmas

When the song of the angels is stilled, When the star in the sky is gone,

When the kings and princes are home, When the shepherds are back with

their flock, The work of Christmas begins:

To find the lost, To heal the broken, To feed the hungry, To release the

prisoner, To rebuild the nations, To bring peace among others, To

make music in the heart.                                          Howard Thurman
