10 questions for Alzheimer's expert Jerold Chun
Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most devastating ailments of our time. Of the top 10 causes of death in the U.S., it is the only disease for which no effective treatment or prevention exists. Recent clinical trial failures have only deepened the pain of patients and their families. As we near the end of World Alzheimer's Month, we caught up with expert Jerold Chun, M.D., Ph.D., professor and senior vice president of Neuroscience Drug Discovery at Sanford Burnham Prebys, to learn about the state of Alzheimer’s disease research in the wake of these setbacks—and whether there's hope on the horizon.

Long sought-after protein structure solved
Deciphering the shape of a protein is crucial, as it enables rational drug design.
Now, Francesca Marassi, Ph.D., has solved the structure of vitronectin—an important blood protein—which
could lead to medicines for multi-drug-resistant bacteria, cancer metastasis, age-related macular degeneration and more. The study was published in
Science Advances

DNA shape makes a big difference in your health
Pier Lorenzo Puri, M.D., has used a cutting-edge genomic technology to show that MyoD—a master regulator of muscle development—can alter the genome's architecture and determine if DNA mutations are expressed or hidden. The study, published in
Molecular Cell, helps explain why patients with the same mutation can have different disease progression and symptoms.
