10 things you can expect from the H 2 O 2018 event
1.Passionate debate

A panel of experts with different perspectives will discuss net pen aquaculture (open cage fish farming) from opportunities to risks.

2.Get inside the challenges of combating climate change for municipalities

Dr. Carto from the Office of the Environmental Commissioner ( ECO ) talks about impacts and causes of global warming and the challenges for municipalities.
Dr. Carto's appearance at H2O 2018 is on the heels of the ECO releasing the, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Report, "Climate Action in Ontario. What's Next?" which shows why Ontario's GHG emissions went down from 2005 to 2016. The ECO notes, " But the government’s recent halt to climate programs could reverse that trend, and throw away the lowest cost pathways to a sustainable economy." Read the press release.

3.Understand why your fashion choices put an alarming amount of minuscule pieces of plastic into Georgian Bay and your drinking water
Come and hear Dr. Rochman from the University of Toronto speak about the sources of tiny pieces of plastic pollution (microplastics) that are increasing in our water and impacting wildlife. She will let us know what we should be asking and doing to mitigate this pollutant.

4.Inspiring stories of Georgian Bayers taking on Phragmites and winning
Whether you know what Phragmites are or not - you'll be inspired by these community leaders taking on this threat to the coastal wetlands of Georgian Bay. Take back their successes and learnings to your community.

5.There are bi-national commitments to protecting the Great Lakes. Is there progress?
Commissioner Gordon Walker from the International Joint Commission will report on how the Canadian and American governments are fulfilling the goals of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement while touching on some of the themes of the day.
6.Food for thought..but also food...

Enjoy coffee and light snacks in the morning and a lovely lunch while digesting these issues so critical to Georgian Bay.
