It has been ten years since this group of hearty volunteers traveled to El Salvador to start the very first StoveTeam factory. Since that time, more than 25 teams have helped build and support stove factories throughout Central America and Mexico. Volunteers ages eight through 78 have participated, and during that time I’ve spoken to anyone who would listen, from schools to the White House, to raise awareness of the dangers of open fire cooking. Who knew that smoke from indoor cooking fires was killing so many women and children?
Now that more than 66,000 stoves have been distributed and more than half-a -million individuals have had their lives improved, we are just beginning.
Our staff has grown to three, and we are getting more stoves out than ever before. Two members of StoveTeam staff and I will be on-the-ground in Central America this month to carry out work that YOU have made possible. Mike will be testing an Ecocina with a chimney adapter, as well as a larger institutional stove for schools. I will be leading a volunteer trip and cutting the ribbon at the opening of Marco’s
factory in Guatemala. Later this week, Inara will lead our first team to Nicaragua.
Thank you for your support, enthusiasm and dedication to replacing open cooking fires with safe alternatives. We could not have come this far without you.
