January 2023

To our community supporters: Thank you for all of your caring support for our first responders. In light of the arrest of the five Memphis police officers for their involvement in the death of Tyre Nichols, it saddens all of us that a senseless tragedy happened at the hands of those who are sworn to serve and protect. Those five individuals do not represent the hardworking men and women who take very seriously their responsibility of serving their community, protecting every individual, and upholding the the oath they took to preserve the laws of this great nation under our U.S. Constitution. May we all work for a better future with justice for all.

100 Club President

Chris Bell

Chris Bell has been focused on firefighting since his teen years, when he was an explorer with the Vallejo Fire Department. He signed on with Fairfield Fire around 2002 as a reserve, and was picked up full-time a few years later.

During the past 20 years, the firefighter engineer-turned-acting captain battled many blazes in support of others. These days he’s getting used to the community rallying around him for what has become the fight of his life — that of Stage 4 colon cancer.

“I’m doing pretty good,” the 38-year-old married father of three said on a recent day. “You have your good days and your bad days.”

Bell’s family — Stefanie, his wife of 15 years and daughters, Rowan (10), Nova (7) and Lincoln (5) keep him grounded, he said, as they’re his reason for being.

His firefighter family, he shared, also mean a lot to him.

“Fairfield’s just been a different culture. It’s very family friendly and everyone knows each other. We do so much outside of work. … It’s just a big family-values vibe,” he said.

Bell gets at least 10 texts a day from his department, he added, from people just checking in, which helps keep him positive. His diagnosis is, after all, serious, he explained, as it’s his second bout of cancer.

In January 2021 he was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer. He underwent surgery and six months of chemotherapy.

Last August, a biopsy of a tumor on his liver came back negative. A second biopsy, however, returned positive. Treatment includes another six months of chemo and his survival rate, at the high end, may be five years.

Undeterred, the family reached out to retired Vacaville police officer Walt Simon, who is also undergoing treatment for cancer, described as Stage 4 pancreatic cancer (www.gofundme.com/f/walt-simons-road-to-recovery).Through Simon and his family, the Bells learned about specialized treatments offered by the Integrative Cancer Center of America (www.integrativecancercenterofamerica.com) and decided to pursue them.

Treatment is expensive, but offers the family hope as any extra time with Bell will be a wish come true.

The firefighter said he’s humbled by the outpouring from the community, and ever so grateful for the GoFundMe started by a new friend, Dawn Milsaps, who also handled Simon’s GoFundMe.

“It takes a huge burden off of us,” he said. “We’re taking it one day at a time.”

Fairfield Fire Chief Matt Luckenbach said the department is pulling for Bell, whom they literally watched grow up.

“The department is in a bit of a funk right now,” he said. “Everybody loves Chris.”

There’s meal trains and check-ins to ensure the Bell family’s focus remains on recovery and healing, the chief said, and anything else that’s needed will be done.

“We love him and we have his back,” Luckenbach continued, adding that Bell is not alone during this crisis. “This isn’t one person fighting a battle. It’s a tribe of firefighters and their families.”

On New Year’s Eve, the community came together to support Walt Simon, retired police officer from Vacaville PD who has been diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer. Solano Family First Responders hosted the black tie event to help raise funds for specialized cancer treatment. Many thanks to all who attended! It was a great show of community support. If you were not able to come but wish to donate, there is a GoFundMe set up for Walt and the link is down below.

Walt Simon's family and friends are organizing a Go-Fund Me on his behalf. Walt moved to Vacaville, California, in 1982, where he attended Will C. Wood Jr High. Walt then went on to graduate from Vacaville High School in 1989. He married his high school sweetheart Tracy in 1996, and they have 2 beautiful daughters, CC and Birdy. Walt started his career in Law Enforcement with Suisun PD in 1992 and retired in 2021 with the Vacaville Police department as a Police Officer after 29 total years of service. Walts's dedicated service was especially focused on the P.A.L organization and his love for youth as a School Resource Officer. While he was dedicated to his career, his true love and focus has always been his family. Walt and Tracy's dedication was displayed as they coached softball side by side for their daughters until they Graduated High School. Walt has been recently diagnosed with stage 4 Pancreatic inoperable cancer. His family and friends are reaching out in the hopes of raising money to benefit his upcoming medical journey. We aim to raise $60,000 to cover travel and a specialized treatment plan at the Integrative Cancer Center of America. www.integrativecancercentersofamerica.com. We are very hopeful we can reach this goal for one of the most deserving and loving man and his wonderful family we are blessed to know. Thank you for your support.

Wood goes 1-2 at Davis Tournament

The Will C. Wood boys basketball team went 1-2 over the weekend at the Davis Tournament.

On Thursday Wood lost to Whitney 74-51.

Jayden Hamilton-Holland led Wood with 23 points and Isiah Dixon added eight points and Nigel Rogers and Julian Martinez put in seven points each.

“We played really well but let one quarter get away from ourselves,” Wood head coach Mark Wudel said.

On Friday Wood bounced back with a 58-47 win over Roseville.

“We played a great first half and then came out in the third quarter and couldn’t do anything,” Wudel said. “We gave up the lead in the fourth quarter only to come back and not let them score in the final four minutes and get the win.”

Dixon led Wood 17 points and Hamilton-Holland added 14 points. Martinez contributed 10 points.

Finally on Saturday, Wood lost to El Camino 59-51

“We let down in the second quarter where we couldn’t do anything right and the game got away from us,” Wudel said. “We battled back and tied the game with two minutes to go. We missed some shots and free throws at the end and had to foul and put them on the line. They made their free throws and sealed the win.

Dixon and Hamilton-Holland each scored 17 points to lead the team. Wood is now 7-4 on the season.

Thank you to @saffronindiancuisineandbar for hosting our first downtown business watch of the year!

Downtown business owners came together this weekend to discuss crime and safety in the downtown area. Special guests included @cityoffairfield Economic and Development and our dedicated Downtown Business Coordinator.

Over an evening meal, we discussed police response to recent calls for service in the downtown, updates to the trespassing (602) process and, of course, hosting the biggest night out against crime on Tuesday August 1 - National Night Out!

Continuing with the theme of downtown revitalization, Economic Development and the Downtown Business Coordinator discussed exciting changes coming to our downtown area in the form of new building constructs. There was an overall positive response from our business owners to the increase in walk and bike ability in the downtown area, as there has been more foot traffic.

We want to thank our downtown business owners for their patience and partnership throughout this revitalization process. More great things are yet to come!

Don’t be left out of the conversation: Get together with your business neighbors, and form your own business watch. For more information, contact a Crime Prevention Specialist at nrusso@fairfield.ca.gov.
