Vanden High boys basketball team came up a little short in section title game. Sacramento came from behind in fourth quarter to win 66-61.

SACRAMENTO — The Vanden High School boys basketball team was looking for a section three-peat, but it was too many 3-pointers by Sacramento that eventually doomed the Vikings at the Golden 1 Center on Saturday.

The Dragons hit five 3-pointers in the first quarter to build a big lead and then came back in the fourth quarter with big long-distance shots from Landon Minnifield and Mike Wilson for a 66-61 win and a Sac-Joaquin Section Division III title.

Vanden held a 47-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter, but couldn’t hold on.

“We had turnovers at the wrong moments and then gave up back-to-back 3-pointers that were wide open and that was a back-breaker,” Vanden head coach Michael Holloway said. “It was a combination of them doing stuff and us not doing stuff. We had key turnovers and they made big shots and that gave them momentum. Today they played faster than us and were better.”

The Vikings fell behind 9-2 before they could even blink as Sir Marius Jones hit two shots from long distance and Minnifield hit another.

Vanden went on an 8-2 run sparked by a jumper from Elijah Lewis, a put-back from Sterling McClanahan and a put-back by Jayden Robinson to make it 14-11 in favor of the Dragons.

Sacramento led 19-13 after the first quarter, increasing the lead to 25-13 early in the period on back-to-back layups from Jones and Kendahl Hearne’s jumper.

Vanden responded with a 12-4 run of its own, sparked by a 3-pointer from E’Jay Rogers to make it 29-25. Vanden got even closer at the buzzer when Jayden Robinson hit a 3-pointer at the top of the key to bridge the gap to 32-30.

The Vikings kept the momentum up in the third when Edric Dennis nailed a 3-pointer to make it 33-32 and give Vanden its first lead of the game.

Happy 3rd birthday, Maddox!

Benicia Police Annual Awards Ceremony

We had a wonderful event celebrating Benicia PD staff at their annual awards ceremony. It was bittersweet and a bit emotional realizing this was Kenny’s last one. I was so proud to sit at his side this morning. Cheers to Chief Mike Greene, a dear friend, as he closes out his time in law enforcement this year as well.

Also super proud to cheer on a fellow WCPD alum, Ashley Wright, and now sergeant, Michelle Rice, who jokingly called me “mom” as a young cop working for Kenny when we first met. Detective Rory Logan sets the gold standard and happy to make new friends with Officer Jessica Aguinaga.

A Tribute to our Dispatchers

“Just A Dispatcher”

In order to understand who I am, you must first understand what I do.

I am the person who listens to you cry as you’re begging your mother to take another breath.

I am the person who tries to get you to give your father CPR knowing that he has passed but, in some way, may help you to know you did everything that you could.

I am the person who walks you through the Heimlich maneuver while your child is choking on a toy.

I am the person who convinces you that life is worth living and that your family needs you here when you think that all hope is gone.

I am the person who leaves my family, my home, and puts my own life in danger during snow, hurricanes and bad weather so that I may be here to answer your emergency.

I am simply “Just A Dispatcher” in most eyes.

To my family and friends, please understand that when I’m short-tempered or impatient it’s not you, it’s the weight of my job that may have taken a toll that day. Instead of bringing it home I choose to keep it bottled up to protect you from the reality of the world in which we live.

To my kids, please understand when I’m strict and paranoid wanting to track your every movement. It’s because I know that a child didn’t make it home to their family that day.

To my mother, please forgive me for not having the patience to always sit through your entire conversation; it's only because I’m trained to get all pertinent information within a certain amount of time. So, I don’t have the patience that I used to.

To my friends, please understand when I can’t show up for every birthday or event you may have invited me to. Or the times we aren’t able to talk on the phone to catch up; it may be because I am working or too mentally drained to be there.

To the thousand of callers that I speak to that think that I’m “Just a Dispatcher,” remember that I may not be the first to arrive at your house but I’m the first person that you may speak to on possibly one of the worse days of your life.

So, I will leave with a quote from Dr. Seuss “To the world you may be one person; but to one person you may be the world.
