Cal State LA celebrates its national champion volleyball team

Golden Eagle pride was on display at a pep rally held to celebrate the Cal State LA volleyball team’s historic national championship. The celebration on Feb. 8 featured remarks by Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Daryl Gross, Head Coach Juan Figueroa, and President Berenecea Johnson Eanes. “You are the perfect example of what all of us need to see right now,” Eanes told the team as the crowd gathered near the steps of the bookstore. “You are it. Please embrace that and don’t let it go.” Two members of the winning team, Shelby Grubbs and Haley Roundtree, offered moving reflections of their road to victory and accepted a certificate of recognition from Betsaira Aguilera, east area representative for Mayor Karen Bass. Emcee Dameion “Lucky” Smith led the crowd in applauding and honoring the volleyball team. The day of celebration began with a team luncheon hosted by Interim Vice President for Student Life Patrick Day. In December, the Golden Eagles scored the program’s first ever NCAA Division II National Championship with a four-set win over defending national champion West Texas A&M. Our national championship is the ninth for any sport in Cal State LA’s history. Visit our photo gallery to experience some of the event highlights.
