Dear friends,

My offer back on Feb 17 immediately sold the 60 bottles we had.

It took a few months, but I was able to get more for you.

The Greatest Brunello Buy of
The Greatest Brunello Vintage:
"Extraordinary quality / seems to have an almost endless finish. It’s exceptional in every way / masters in their vineyards and cellar, making perfectly proportioned Brunellos."
-James Suckling, 100 Points
#1 Top 100 of Italy 2020
#3 Top 100 (Global) 2020

"...the best young wine I can remember ever tasting from this estate / heroic structure / This is a gorgeous vintage..."
-Vinous, 97 Points

  • Only 45 bottles left

  • Only 2,000 cases imported

  • 4th Generation Brunello winemaking family

  • 1 of 11 founders of Brunello Consortium est 1967

  • STILL $84.99 per bottle

Fortunately, in order to get more Brunello, I had to purchase Sassetti's 2016 Montecucco Rosso—one of my all-time favorite Tuscan values. I'm passing the savings onto to you:
I had the ultimate privilege of hosting Lorenzo and Sabina Sassetti for an unbelievable private tasting for our VIPs back on Feb 2020:
I also had to purchase Sassetti's 2015 Brunello Riserva, which I'm ALSO passing the savings on to you.

We've been waiting impatiently for two years to send you this offer. Back in February 2020, Lorenzo and Sabina Sassetti suitcased a sample of their not-yet-released 2016 Brunello for us to preview. I don't need to go into detail about how the room reverberated pleasurable moans from everyone after tasting...

...then came a global pandemic.

...then the import supply chain completely broke down for the foreseeable future.

It doesn't matter anymore — we have 45 bottles and that's all you need to know to act fast. Also, in addition to being utterly delicious, your bottles will immediately gain value in your cellar

  • 100 Point wine

  • STILL offered at release price.

This is a traditional Brunello house with a very classic style. Four generations of the Sassetti family have made wine in Montalcino and founder Livio was one of the 11 founding members of the Brunello di Montalcino producer's consortium, which was created back in 1967. Today the estates are managed by Lorenzo Sassetti, Livio's son, who is an acclaimed winemaker. Here is some background courtesy of Vinous Media's Eric Guido:

"The Pertimali vineyards surround the winery in one single block, all located on the Montosoli hill in the northern part of Montalcino. For many years now, I’ve enjoyed the house's old-school, pleasurably rustic style, combined with fleshy primary fruit and balanced structure to match... the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino [is] the best young wine I can remember ever tasting from this estate."

All of Lorenzo’s wines have deep roots in their respective terroirs, showcasing his willingness to preserve their traditional features. The wines are invigorating, aromatic, powerful styles that dance on the palate rather than attack it with blunt force. The Sassetti’s “Pertimali” Brunello di Montalcino is a collector’s wine, a true benchmark for Brunello.

A friendly reminder on the historic 2016 Brunello vintage:
Here's what Monica Larner (Wine Advocate) had to say in her report on the potential of 2016, ahead of the traditional January 1 release date:
"This is an iconic year, with well-timed moments of crisp coolness (as opposed to the heat spikes we saw in 2015) to shape sharp and linear wines with excellent potential for cellar aging. The 2016 vintage rolls in with the same fanfare and hysteria that surrounded the classic 2010 vintage. It promises to be a well-earned success for Brunello producers."

In fact, she gave the 2016 vintage a higher score (98) than she did the "picture perfect" 2015, so we are expecting great things of these wines!

James Suckling, too, pointed to the potential of the 2016 vintage in THIS article, calling it another "pair of great vintages" and saying
"I like to say that 2016 would be the greatest vintage ever for Brunello if it weren’t for the stupendous 2015."

I have 45 bottles of 2016 Brunello, 18 of the 2015 Riserva, and 60 of the Montecucco Rosso. Waste no time in placing your order!

Ciao,
—James Tran
2016 Livio Sassetti "Pertimali"
Brunello di Montalcino DOCG

100 Points - James Suckling:
"Blackberries, black walnuts and black cherries, as well as loads of chewy tannins. Some smoked wood, wood tannins and even black truffles. It’s full-bodied and powerful with loads going on. It just keeps growing on the palate. So much wet earth and black olive at the finish with porcini mushrooms, too. Needs time to soften. Crazy finish. Try after 2025." (Oct 2020)

97 Points - Wine Enthusiast:
"Red berry, violet and menthol aromas fill the glass alongside a whiff of underbrush in this full-bodied red. The tightly wound palate offers Marasca cherry, licorice, tobacco and a hint of game set against a backbone of assertive, fine-grained tannins. Flashes of bright acidity keep it balanced. Drink 2024–2036." - Kerin O'Keefe (5/1/2021)

97 Points - Vinous:
"If checking in early, make sure to give the towering 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from Pertimali plenty of time to stretch its legs. It’s incredibly shy and backward upon first pulling the cork, coming to life nearly an hour later and never taking a step back from there on out. A beguiling display of spiced orange peels, sour cherry and mint pull you closer to the glass, where notes of cardamom, cinnamon, clove and sage reside. It’s dangerously soft and supple at first sip with fleshy red fruits and sweet spices blanketing the palate; yet beneath this soothing mix, a complex web of minerals and fine tannin slowly saturate. That said, there’s a lively bolt of acidity which maintains freshness in spite of the 2016’s heroic structure. Inner florals resonate along with a hint of white pepper, as it tapers off with classic austerity. This is a gorgeous vintage for Pertimali." - Eric Guido (Nov 2020)

2015 Livio Sassetti "Pertimali"
Brunello di Montalcino Riserva DOCG

96 Points - James Suckling:
"Really pretty, sweet berries, cherries and fresh flowers on the nose. Orange peel, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with very fine tannins that are polished and attractive and melt into the wine. Such purity and finesse. Drink or hold." (Nov 2020)

95 Points - Vinous:
"The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva struts its old-school stylings with a beguiling display of musky cherry and strawberry offset by damp earth tones, hints of cedar and mint. It’s unbelievably soft and silky in texture, ushering in ripe red berry fruits laced in saline-minerals and savory spice, with building inner florals toward the close. Formidable structure awaits on the finish, yet the 2015 Riserva manages to maintain freshness, coming across as both structured for the long haul but also with enough primary appeal to warrant checking in on today. It’s gorgeous. Tasted over the course of two days with consistent results." - Eric Guido (Nov 2020)

2016 Livio Sassetti Pertimali
"La Querciolina" Montecucco Rosso DOC

93 Points - Vinous Media:
"The bouquet is dark and earthy in the best possible way, as savory herbs give way to crushed black cherry, encased in an air of smoky minerals, sous-bois, and hints of animal musk. The 2016 Montecucco Rosso then floods the palate with silky textures, offset by cool-toned red fruits and minerals, riding a core of brisk acids. It finishes with medium length yet brimming with energy, as a mix of savory spice and minerality slowly tapers off, leaving just a hint of dried cranberry. This is gorgeous and an amazing value." - Eric Guido (Jun 2020)

91 Points - James Suckling:
"A firm and silky red with berries and a hint of chocolate. Some coffee, too. Medium body, firm yet polished tannins and a fresh finish. Drink now." (10/17)
