WEEK FOUR began here at the SD State Capitol with a ‘Pro-Life Bang’ as nearly #250 Pro-Life friends of every generation gathered on Sunday, Feb. 1, in Pierre for our Annual ‘March for Life’ and ‘Hour of Reflection.’ More details to follow below.

Then came Monday and things are hopping here in the halls of our Capitol during South Dakota's 101st Legislative SessionTo date we have seen #469 Bills filed and some #27 Resolutions. Watch for these numbers to CLIMB and when they do…SDRTL will be watching!

A number of our Bills are still in the process of being fine-tuned so simply stay informed and follow our work at the Capitol by going to our website at …sdRightToLife.org…and then click on the ‘Legislative Information Tab. Currently…..

SDRTL IS SUPPORTING: (Click on Bill Numbers below to read)

  • House Concurrent Resolution 6002 - 'Honoring the life and achievements of the late Charlie Kirk'.  This Resolution recently passed on the House Floor on a vote of 60 to 5 and on the Senate Floor on a vote of 31 to 2.

  • House Bill 1127 - The Birth Center Bill:  “An Act to revise provisions related to birth centers and the practice of certified professional midwives at birth centers.”  This bill will expand the mileage that a birth center can be from a birthing hospital to allow the rural, underserved communities to receive perinatal services, hopefully improving maternal mortality and infant mortality. It also enables Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) to supervise birth centers, a common practice across many other states.

  • House Bill 1153 - The Med Act Bill:  "An Act to protect Certain rights of healthcare providers.” This bill will protect health care professionals and students whose strong pro-life and other family-valued views are important.  To be clear - The Med Act is a SHIELD…not a SWORD.

  • House Bill 1182 - Embryo Reporting Bill: "An Act to establish a data collection system pertaining to assisted reproductive technology. All lives have value and dignity INCLUDING at our earliest stage of development. If human life is going to be constructed in a laboratory, then frozen, researched or destroyed, it makes sense that the state at least has an interest in knowing the disposition of those human embryos.

SDRTL IS OPPOSING:

  • House Bill 1212 – Penalties to the Mother's Bill: "An Act to review provisions in order to strengthen protections for unborn children.”  When making decisions with the intent to save lives, we believe HB1212 would ultimately send us backwards on the pro-life progress we’ve made in our state over the past 54-years.  We have always advocated to ’Support Her, Protect Them’ as we promote good, thoughtful Pro-Life legislation. HB1212, although well-intended, will take us down the wrong path and thus we seek its defeat.

Thank you for standing with us and praying for us as together we advocate and legislate for LIFE

Joy for LIFE: The 2026 March for Life and Hour of Reflection

By: Jenn Lee, SDRTL Executive Director

What a marvelous day it was for the 53rd annual SDRTL March for Life and Hour of Reflection at the capitol in Pierre! We had a whopping 30 degrees (and no wind!) for our march, and an enthusiastic crowd, led by Dr. Pat Castle, founder of LIFE Runners. We enjoyed incredible music by Kate McKeehan, amazing readings of our Junior and Senior Division Essay Contest Winners, and an inspiring speech from our Keynote, Jenna Spellerberg, Nurse Manager of Alpha Center, who challenged us to "Support Her, Protect Them." We also heard from Attorney General Marty Jackley, and Governor Larry Rhoden shared encouraging words with attendees, remarking on how South Dakota is the most pro-life state in the union.

We are so grateful to the Pierre Area Right to Life group for hosting, and for the capitol staff for their hospitality. Thank you to all who joined us-- we hope you were as blessed as we were!

One of our amazing SDRTL Chapters has stepped up to fully sponsor one young adult, age 18–25, to attend the National Right to Life Academy for one week this summer in Washington, D.C. This incredible academy offers intensive pro-life training led by foremost leaders in the movement, covering topics such as:

  • abortion
  • euthanasia
  • stem cell research
  • Planned Parenthood
  • legislative strategy
  • politics
  • communication
  • grassroots organizing
  • IVF...and much more!

The cost per student is $2,500, which covers tuition for the Academy, one round-trip flight, a seven-night hotel stay, and meals. Our goal is to match this gift and send two outstanding young leaders from South Dakota to attend. If we exceed our goal, we will be able to sponsor additional students.
