Community Christmas Tree arrives downtown
This year’s Community Christmas Tree is now set up in the middle of Main Street near the corner of State Street, thanks to our city workers.
The tree donated by the Shepherd family from Broken Ridge development was cut at 43 feet tall before trimming. It was five feet tall when planted in 1994 by Grandpa Everett, Dick and Rick Shepherd. Looks like a blue spruce.

Christmas Tree Lighting will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25. Details.

First coat distribution: Smashing success!
| |
A smashing success at Fast Help Foundation’s first ever coat distribution occurred at the Harbor Springs Community Food Pantry on Monday, Nov 6. Limited to patrons of the pantry, we were delighted to give coats to so many of our regular patrons as well as experiencing an unexpected but welcome significant uptick in first-time visitors who came for food and coats. A special thanks to Society of St Vincent de Paul as well as New Beginnings Resale Shop for their important collaboration!
Dori Steckley of Fast Help Foundation arranges coats for distribution.
|
The season for giving is in full swing and it is good to see so many stepping up during this time. However, Fast Help Foundation offers continual help to Emmet County residents who need a boost all year. So far 2023 has seen us pay rents, insurances, deliver groceries to families who aren’t able to get to town, provide gas cards/food cards, provide gift certificates to local stores, support the local food pantry and so much more. We depend on donations to allow us to maintain our presence and activities. Please consider a donation to allow us to continue, and expand, providing fast, no red tape help to those who suddenly find themselves in a bind.
Donate easily through our website at www.fasthelpfoundation.org. Of course, we are always also delighted to receive checks or cash. Thanks in advance for your support!

Community Guide now taking ad reservations
|
The Harbor Springs Area Chamber of Commerce will continue to work with Harbor House Publishing to produce our second Community and Visitors Guide - ALL chamber members will continue to be included at no additional cost.
This guide will represent all of the Harbor Springs Area Chamber of Commerce members. Unique categories will make it easy to find our businesses, trades, restaurants, and things to do for visitors. This guide will serve as a roadmap to our community. It will also be a “front porch introduction” for visitors who are unfamiliar with the area and want to learn more about our area as well as find hotels, restaurants, stores, real estate and community services. The guide will feature and represent all chamber members.
We will again be working closely with Candi Wynn, who is an account executive for Harbor House Publishers, to sell advertisements for our publication. For questions or to reserve your advertising space, please call Candi Wynn at 231-582-2814 ext. 124 or reserve your ad online.
The publication will be distributed to all of our businesses as well as strategic locations throughout Northern Michigan. We hope you will consider advertising in this exceptional publication. If not, your business will be listed regardless.
We expect the guide to be out by the beginning of May 2024, ready for you, as well as those who will be with us for the summer.

Humane Society celebrates National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week
|
National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week is an annual celebration dedicated to recognizing the unwavering commitment of animal shelters and their loyal staff. During this special week, we will honor and celebrate Little Traverse Bay Humane Society (LTBHS) and the heroic team devoted to providing compassionate care to homeless animals throughout Northern Michigan and beyond.
For years, LTBHS has been tirelessly working to provide comfort for animals while they search for their forever homes, and they could not do this without the support of the community.
| |
|
|
Last year, LTBHS welcomed over 700 animals into their care from all with the primary goal of finding their forever homes.
National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week is a time to celebrate the immense dedication and heartfelt work that goes into the lifesaving work at LTBHS. From their determined efforts to find loving families for each animal to their commitment to community support through their subsidiaries, this shelter is an invaluable asset to the Harbor Springs community and beyond.
What sets LTBHS apart is their unwavering dedication to sustainably and respectfully serving pets and the people who love them. The team at LTBHS comprises a small staff of passionate animal lovers who work tirelessly to improve the lives of these animals. "I am so proud of the work that we do at Little Traverse Bay Humane Society to provide a safe haven for animals in need," said Sarah Schertel, Director of Operations at LTBHS.
"I am consistently humbled by my team, and I’m grateful I have the opportunity work with each of them. We invite the public to get involved however they are able, by joining us at the shelter to volunteer, inviting a pet into their home by fostering or adopting, donating supplies on-site or through the mail. Even making a short visit to the shelter to thank the staff at LTBHS for their efforts will make a big difference- we couldn’t do it without you!” says Schertel. These actions will help the shelter continue their mission of finding forever homes for every animal that enters their care.

Community Foundation breaks ground on "Lofts" affordable housing project
We did it! Alongside project partners, the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Community Foundation hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking on Nov. 4th for the Lofts at Lumber Square, a 60-unit apartment building in the city of Petoskey. We took one giant step toward creating new housing for people who live and work in our community.
The Lofts at Lumber Square apartment building, a project of Haan Development, was a vision well before the Community Foundation got involved. About two and a half years ago, the Lofts project was in jeopardy when a specific funding piece fell through, thereby providing us with a unique opportunity. We began working with Haan Development and then property owners Al and Toni Gruler to see what was possible. With their commitment and generous community support, we purchased this parcel in May 2022 specifically to preserve it for workforce housing and with the high hopes that the Lofts apartments would soon be home to members of our community.
Two years later, 60 new apartments within walking distance to downtown Petoskey are becoming a reality. The Community Foundation is humbled to work alongside an impressive and diverse list of project partners that span the public-private spectrum. From local government and housing partnerships, to state agencies, funders, and nonprofit housing organizations. Thanks to so many, the Lofts at Lumber Square will soon be home to about 165 members of our community.
Today we celebrate the power of partnerships to create solutions to complex community needs like housing. Together we can do more.

Spreading Thanksgiving cheer to families in need
This year marks the 21st year employees at Stafford’s Pier Restaurant in Harbor Springs will unite with their guests to feed families in need in our local community on Thanksgiving Day through the "Neighbors in Need" program. Since 2003, the Stafford’s Hospitality Neighbors in Need program has served nearly 18,800 individuals in our local community by delivering traditional Thanksgiving dinner to families who don’t have the means to celebrate this special holiday.
