Mobilize your Community

Are you connected to a faith community? Encourage your community to participate in Interfaith Power & Light’s Cool Congregations Challenge. This challenge is an annual national contest to recognize “Cool Congregations” that are becoming energy efficient and sustainable role models within their communities. Application period opens November 1 each year. Deadline for entries, December 15.

The Center for Collaborative Heat Monitoring (A NIHHIS Center of Excellence) has announced a funding opportunity for community-based heat data collection campaigns.

The Flourishing in Community Grantmaker is offering noncompetitive awards to support capacity-constrained communities and community-based organizations (CBOs) within Region 2 (which includes Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands).

For the SCDRP 9th Annual Meeting, the Steering Committee has chosen to explore the theme: "Cultivating Climate-Resilient Communities: Advances in Communication & Collaboration." All meeting sessions will build off of this theme. We are also excited to announce that for the first time, SCDRP will be holding a Poster Session during the Annual Meeting. Poster Abstracts will be accepted between now and December 2nd. Selected posters will be displayed for the duration of the meeting, and participants will have the opportunity to share their information with meeting attendees during Poster Sessions. Posters will not be judged, just shared. | |
Partner Announcement: CivicSpark (a resilience-focused AmeriCorps program) was just awarded funding to expand the program into the SCDRP region (starting with Florida, Georgia, Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and DC). The Flourishing in Community Grantmaker is offering noncompetitive awards to support capacity-constrained communities and community-based organizations (CBOs) within Region 2. These $75,000 subawards are designed for ease of access, with a streamlined process that does not require participation in the competitive review process. Any person or organization in Region 2: New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and eight federally recognized Indian Nations may submit a nomination, including self-nominations. The application deadline is March 31, 2025. Apply here.
The Center for Collaborative Heat Monitoring (A NIHHIS Center of Excellence) has announced the opening of a funding opportunity for community-based heat data collection campaigns. Communities will receive training, technical support, and a $10,000 stipend to conduct a heat data collection campaign in 2025. The Center will prioritize applications from communities that have experienced historical patterns of discrimination, underinvestment and disenfranchisement and have limited resources to conduct heat monitoring on their own. Rural communities, tribal nations, U.S. territories and communities that have not previously undergone heat mapping are especially encouraged to apply.

Communities that submit an optional Expression of Interest by November 15, 2024 will have the opportunity to be matched with a “mentor” community to share their experiences with participatory science and provide additional guidance.

The Georgia Climate Project (GCP) is seeking community input for two climate-focused conferences in 2025: Super South (April 15-17) and the Georgia Climate Conference (October 20-21). GCP is collaborating with partners to develop content for both conferences. We are seeking community input on a wide range of topics and ideas, including but not limited to: building readiness for climate impacts (adaptation/resilience), reducing emissions (mitigation), climate research, climate solutions, and/or climate communication. Please complete this form to propose ideas for sessions or any other creative ideas for the conferences.
Registration and abstract submissions are now open for the Drought and Aquatic Ecosystems in the Southeast: Informing drought response and ecological resilience to future low-flow events workshop being held on January 7-9, 2025, in Raleigh, North Carolina. (Abstracts due November 22)
Natural Hazards Center: Disability and Disasters Award
The Disability and Disasters Award supports people with disabilities working in disasters, as well as those who care for, study, or advocate on behalf of those with disabilities. Award funds will allow the recipient to attend the annual Natural Hazards Workshop and the Researchers or Practitioners Meetings that follow. Recipients of this award will be recognized at the Workshop and will be asked to present a poster or to serve as panelists, where they can highlight their research and/or practical experiences with disability and disasters. (Applications due December 2)
Natural Hazards Center: Mary Fran Myers Scholarship
The Mary Fran Myers Scholarship recognizes outstanding individuals who share Myers' commitment to disaster research and practice and have the potential to make a lasting contribution to reducing disaster vulnerability. At least one scholarship recipient each year will receive financial support allowing them to attend the Annual Natural Hazards Research and Applications Workshop. Scholarships can cover part or all of transportation, meals, lodging, and Workshop registration costs.Recipients are recognized at the Workshop and will be asked to present a poster or to serve as panelists, where they can highlight their research or practical experiences with hazards and disasters. The American Society of Adaptation Professionals invites its members and organizations with experience in environmental justice and community advocacy to sign-up to provide technical assistance for communities impacted the most via the EPA Environmental Justice Thriving Communities Technical Assistance Centers (“TCTAC”) Program. The goal of the TCTAC Program is to remove institutional barriers and to improve accessibility to federal funding for disinvested communities impacted by decades of structural environmental injustice and are already doing essential environmental and energy justice work.
