Below are highlights from the North Shore School District 112 Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, December 18, 2018, a s well as some end of year information.
Teacher Presentation - "Northwood Gives Back"
Northwood students and teachers presented details of their new club "Northwood Gives Back" to the Board of Education. “Northwood Gives Back” is based on the foundation that every person has the power of giving time, energy, and skills to make a difference in the local community.

The student and staff club members spoke about the club’s seven guiding principles, and give highlights of service learning trips to date, including an ongoing partnership Boys and Girls Club of Lake County.

Superintendent’s Report - Kennedy Park Lease, 5E’s, and the SCFC Application
Topics of Tuesday night’s Superintendent’s Report focused on the lease of 2.80 acres of school district land at Kennedy Park to HP Community Nursery School. Dr. Lubelfeld gave an overview of the number of times the potential lease had been publicly discussed including October 2nd, 4th, and 23rd, November 27th at both Regular Board of Education and Long-Range Planning Committee meetings. He went on to list several considerations for leasing the land including but not limited to the fact that the land is not currently being used by the district, they serve children that go on to attend NSSD112, HP Community needs community help and support, and they have a similar mission of serving the educational interests of the children in our community.

At a special board meeting on December 19th , the Board approved the lease of the Kennedy Park land. With the approval of the lease, HP Community will now go through an extensive permitting and public community engagement process that is mandated by the City of Highland Park.

The superintendent's report also touched on the State of Illinois’ 5Essentials Survey. The District is asking parents to respond to this survey that is administered by the state every other school year. He also gave an update on the application process for the Superintendent’s Citizen Advisory Committee for Construction (SCFC). The district is seeking 5 citizens to join this group to provide insights, input, and advice in regards to the budget decisions, the scope of projects, timelines, and relevant construction matters. Student & Family Engagement Survey Presentation
Dr. Lubelfeld shared an overview of the results of the INSIGHTeX student and family engagement surveys. School leadership teams are working to analyze the student engagement data, and the administration will work with PTO leadership to analyze the family engagement survey data. Just under 80% of the 3rd-8th grade students in the District are moderately to highly satisfied and engaged in their education as measured on the dimensions of self-esteem, choice, relevancy, safety, etc. Just under 35% of all of the students surveyed are highly satisfied and engaged. More than 75% of family engagement respondents are rating the service quality and the pride in their school moderately to highly; just under 30% are rating the service quality and the pride in their school at the highest levels.

Resolution 181218- Authorizing the issuance of General Obligation School Bonds
At Tuesday’s meeting, the Board approved Resolution #181218 authorizing the issuance of General Obligation School Bonds (Alternate Revenue Source) of the District, in an aggregate principal amount not to exceed $55,000,000 pursuant to the Local Government Debt Reform Act of the State of Illinois, as amended, for the purpose of renovating, repairing, equipping and building additions to the District's Northwood Junior High building and Edgewood Middle School building.
5-Year North Shore Support Staff Association Professional Collective Bargaining Agreement
The Board also approved a successor collective labor agreement between the Board and the North Shore Support Staff Association (NSSSA). The agreement was voted on and ratified by the NSSSA membership on December 13, 2018.

Upcoming Meetings
The next Regular Business Board of Education Meeting will be on Tuesday, January 15th, 2019, at 7:00 p.m. The Board of Education Finance Committee will meet on January 15th, 2019 from 6:00pm-7: 00 pm.

The Board’s Facility Committee will hold meetings on the following dates:
Wednesday, February 20, Wednesday, March 20, Wednesday, April 10, 2019, and Monday, May 13, 2019.

In addition, the Superintendent’s Citizens Advisory Committee for Construction will meet from 5pm-6pm 2/20, 3/20, 4/10, & 5/13, and an orientation for that group will take place in January. Click here for the application for membership.

Looking ahead to January, please be sure to participate in the 112 Education Foundation’s iRead kickoff on Saturday, January 12 from 9 am to 2 pm at the Highland Park Library and the community-wide Martin Luther King Day of Service on January 21, 10 am - 1:30 pm at the Recreation Center of Highland Park.
