Benefit and Pension Funds' Boards of Trustees to Meet this Month 

The 1199SEIU Benefit and Pension Funds’ Boards of Trustees will hold their annual meeting on Wednesday, June 14, and Thursday, June 15, to review the work of 2022. The meeting will be held both onsite at Funds’ Headquarters at 498 Seventh Avenue and via Zoom for those who prefer to participate remotely. This year’s annual meeting will feature “Members’ Voices,” an interactive video display in which 1199SEIU members share their “why”—the personal motivations that sustain them on their individual health journeys. Trustees may use their smartphones to scan QR codes to view members’ stories. 

Training and Employment Funds Receive $3 Million Grant to Address Nursing Shortage

On May 11, the Acting Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training at the U.S. Department of Labor visited the 1199SEIU Training and Employment Funds (TEF) headquarters in Manhattan to announce the award of a $3 million grant to expand and strengthen the nurse talent pipeline and create career pathways to nursing for frontline healthcare workers.

Through this grant, TEF will serve as a central hub for the New York Nursing Talent Pipeline partnership of employers, 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, higher education institutions and others. With this funding, TEF will train unemployed, underemployed and low-wage healthcare workers to be hired at partner employers as Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) through registered apprenticeships and other models; train incumbent LPNs to become Associate of Applied Science (AAS) registered nurses (RNs) and be upgraded at partner employers; train incumbent AAS RNs to earn Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees and be upgraded at partner employers; and train experienced nurses to become preceptors. WorkForce 2000 Summer Youth Employment Program Kicks Off July 5 

The 1199SEIU Child Care Corporation (CCC) will hold its fourth WorkForce 2000 Summer Youth Employment Program from July 5 through August 11. In collaboration with the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development, CCC provides a select number of summer employment opportunities to eligible WorkForce 2000 participants. Applicants must meet strict program criteria, including living in one of the five New York City boroughs, being 16 years old as of July 3, 2023, committing to the full length of the six-week program and attending three days of mandatory training in June. Once they are accepted into the program, students work a maximum of 25 hours per week and earn $15 an hour. This year, students will work at 15 locations, including Maimonides Medical Center, Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, Boro Park Center, Concord Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Triboro Center, Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation, Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center and The New Jewish Home. The 1199SEIU League Training and Upgrading Fund strengthens the healthcare delivery system by offering 1199SEIU members training and education programs designed to help improve patient outcomes and provide quality care. Chronic Illness Informational Care for the Elderly

5:30 pm to 9:00 pm 

This three-hour seminar for nurses, paramedics and EMTs will focus on preventing and treating UTIs in older women, optimizing possible drug therapies for chronically ill elderly patients and caring for the elderly who are experiencing altered mental status. 

Medication Error Prevention and Patient Safety

Thursday, June 15

5:30 pm to 9:00 pm

This three-hour seminar for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and nurses will focus on the importance of organizational culture for supporting medication error reporting, the role of patient- and family-centered care in patient safety, and the optimization of drug allergy captures in clinical decision support systems.
