In response to the ongoing shortage of qualified nurses, the 1199SEIU Training and Employment Funds (TEF) offer 1199SEIU members college-level financial assistance through the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Work Release Stipend Program. The program, which allows members to attend school while working a modified schedule, equips future nurses with the knowledge and skills to meet diverse patient needs, function as leaders and deliver quality care. Eligible Wage Class I or Wage Class II members must be enrolled in a nursing program at a CUNY, SUNY or private academic institution accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The program runs for 16 weeks in the fall and spring semesters, and stipends are issued biweekly during the term of participation. For more information, members may visit www.1199SEIUBenefits.org/Training to register for the Tuition Assistance Online Information Session through MyTEF.
In addition, the annual 1199SEIU Nurse of Distinction Awards gala brings together labor and management to celebrate 1199SEIU RNs for their professionalism, dedication and excellence. All 1199SEIU RNs are eligible to be nominated by their hospital or long-term care institution. Nominees are solicited in November and December and are interviewed in February, with the winners announced at the live gala in May.
