Connecting Members to EITC Services that Put Thousands Back in Their Pockets

The Benefit Funds have long assisted 1199SEIU members in filing for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) by connecting them with free tax preparation services so that they receive the full refund to which they are entitled. Many Home Care Benefit Fund members are eligible for the program, and it can mean thousands more dollars in their pockets than standard tax filing. This year, the Benefit Funds are connecting members with the NYC Free Tax Prep program, the Campaign for Working Families and the nonprofit educational program Ariva. These programs offer free tax preparation assistance through April 15 both in person at locations throughout New York City and online for convenient electronic filing (e-filing) from home. Tax preparation assistance is also available in Westchester County, Long Island and New Jersey through the IRS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Weekday, evening and weekend hours are available and, in some cases, so is walk-in service. For more information or to make an appointment, members should contact the programs directly:

High School Equivalency Program Helps Home Health Aides Take First Step Toward Higher Education

The Training and Employment Funds’ (TEF) High School Equivalency program helps home health aides earn a diploma issued by New York State, building their confidence and providing a path for future academic pursuits. The program focuses on two pathways to earn a high school equivalency diploma: through the General Education Development (GED) test or via the National External Diploma Program, an independent study program for those who have a high school diploma from another country.

Winnie Zou, who completed the program while learning a second language, reflected on her experience. “It was difficult for me,” she said, “but I was always encouraged in the program. I want to thank all the teachers for their help. They helped me realize that it was a challenge, but I could do it.”
