Change to Eligibility Requirements for Health Coverage Takes Effect March 1
As a reminder, the Benefit Fund informed you in February that due to ongoing financial pressures resulting from rising healthcare costs, the Trustees of the Home Care Benefit Fund approved a change to the eligibility requirements for Home Care members to obtain health coverage. Effective March 1, 2022, your 1199SEIU employees and members are required to work 130 hours per month to be eligible for health coverage instead of the previously required 100 hours per month. For example, to be eligible for benefits effective June 1, 2022, members must have worked at least 130 hours in both March and April 2022. The Benefit Fund has also notified your 1199SEIU employees of this change. The Union is continuing to lobby the governor and the New York State Legislature in an effort to obtain state funds to help ease the funding crisis, and the Benefit Fund will keep you informed as new information becomes available. If you have any questions about the change in eligibility requirements, please call the Employer Services Hotline at (646) 473-6413.
Benefit Funds Help Members Claim the Earned Income Tax Credit

For more information, your 1199SEIU employees and members may visit the Benefit Funds’ website or call Member Services at (646) 473-9200.
Training and Employment Funds Offer Onsite English Language Classes
The 1199SEIU Training and Employment Funds (TEF) are now offering onsite English language classes for Speakers of Other Languages for Home Health Aides (HHAs) at Reliance Home Senior Services in Massapequa, New York. The classes, which begin on March 3, will use a TEF textbook specifically designed to help HHAs acquire the language skills they need to perform their jobs effectively. Lessons will focus on English words and phrases that HHAs would commonly use when caring for their clients, including those related to grooming, dressing and making meal selections. The course includes access to a cellphone app for home study that TEF developed in partnership with Cell-Ed, a mobile-learning company. Students will also learn to use the video-conferencing service Zoom for any online classes in the future. Reliance Home Senior Services is providing a stipend for the hours that their HHAs participate in these classes.
