“11th Hour Calling” – Ring Out and March for Climate Justice
The sound of church bells ringing can mean an end or a beginning, or they can represent a warning to the community. On Friday, February 11th, I joined with First Parish Church Cambridge Environmental Justice Team members and rang the bell for 11 minutes to sound the alarm about the Code Red we’re facing with climate change.

It’s our 11th hour calling and we are truly in the 11th hour in the battle against climate change. I’m not going to lie, we are losing the battle right now. But just as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has said – it’s up to us to change our future.
We want our legislators on Beacon Hill and the Governor to pass the Clean Energy Bill.
We want Danielle Allen, Sonia Chang-Diaz and Maura Healey, who are campaigning to become governor of Massachusetts, to commit to undertaking the restructing to reform utilities and to modernize the grid. The current out-going governor has let the utilities lead on clean energy reforms. We don't have time for that and want a governor that will lead instead of defering to the managers.
We ask that those campaigning for governor to commit to requiring 50% of climate spending to benefit environmental justice communities.
We ask that those campaigning for governor to commit to maximize the economic benefits by increasing funding of the Massachusetts Clean Energy Council. Mass CEC provides paid internships for hundreds of college students, clean energy and water management training, and manages an extensive directory of qualified resumes.

At 6:11 pm at the Old Cambridge Baptist Church led by Rev Cody, Rev Betsy and church members, the Boston Area Brigade of Activist Musicians (BABAM) marched down Mass Ave to First Parish Church, while the bell tolled.

We can stem the tide of climate change if we come together as a society and demand it. We must call upon our neighbors, our elected officials and the business community to stand in solidarity against climate change. After all, we’re all in this together.
And so on the 11th of every month, I will ring the church bell for bold action for climate change. The more people who join us on the 11th of every month, the more people will hear our clarion call for climate action. I hope you will join us for the next 11th Hour Calling, Friday March 11.
It’s time to get loud.

Here at the Ocean River Institute, we don’t just talk about the need to fight climate change. We’re using all of our knowledge about the threats we face to press others to take bold action.
And bold action is exactly what the world needs in the fight against climate change. Who's in your corner?

The Ocean River Institute is the only organization that raises a cacophony of voices to decision-makers. When you speak out on any one of our campaigns, you are heard. Thanks to those of you who took the time to write a comment. You are opening the doors of committees and the minds of politicians who serve their constituents or are just looking for a way forward to climate justice.
