11th Ward Update
Dear Neighbor,

I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend!

On Sunday, I attended the annual Canaryville Veterans Memorial Day Ceremony at the Victory Garden. It is always such an honor to be standing amongst so many veterans commemorating the lives of those in the military who lost their lives in service to our Nation.

I would like to thank the Canaryville Veterans for being one of the strongest and most active groups in our community.

Please see below for upcoming community meetings and the ribbon cutting at McInerney Park this week.

RENTAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM:
Public Safety
May 12th was the beat meeting for beat 913/915. The CAPS Officer went over the past months stats that you can see below. The Officer started by going over the two carjackings that occurred, according to the report, were crimes of opportunity and he highlighted the importance of situational awareness. The Officer also went over the shooting that occurred at the gas station on 31st street. It appears the victim knew the offender or were talking with them before the incident, so it was not a random act of violence. The case is still under investigation. The murder that occurred on beat 915 did not happen in the 11th Ward. The next beat meeting will be June 8th at 6:30pm.

Chicago Park District:

Bosley Park
As I have mentioned previously, I have secured $1.4 million in TIF funds for the renovation of Bosley Park.

The renovation is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year. The Park District will host summer activities at Bosley and construction will begin shortly after programming ends.

In addition to new playground equipment, the renovation includes a new artificial turf soccer field, basketball court repaving, and spray pool features.

Donovan Park Announcement:

Alderman Thompson is happy to announce the acquisition of the parcel of land at 837 West 36th Street, for the expansion of Donovan Park. This is the corner parcel, east of the park on the corner of 36th and Lituanica. This purchase was made possible by my allocation of Open Space Impact Fees and Menu Funding.
Furthermore, I have allocated about $900,000 of TIF funds to clean this site as the first step in expanding Donovan Park and the construction of a new field house.

Donovan Park currently has a small field house and is 2.98 acres. Donovan Park, originally Sangamon Park, was established by the Chicago’s Bureau of Parks and Recreation and was sitting on Board of Education property. In 1957, Sangamon Park was renamed to honor Engine 29 Captain George L. Donovan. Donovan lost his life (March 1st, 1957) in the line of duty with two other firefighters.

“I am excited about the long-overdue expansion of Donovan Park. I am eager to meet with our many neighbors and constituents to discuss design elements of the park expansion project,” Thompson said.
