Dear FCC Advocacy folks,

As many of you may have seen, there have been threats of dismantling the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) via media and social media reports, the details of which are now starting to come out in more official channels. See this post by the American Geophysical Union for some of the most detailed information: https://eos.org/research-and-developments/trump-administration-plans-to-break-up-ncar.

NCAR is an important part of our community, an employer of some of our congregation members, and aligns with our Climate Action Team and our efforts as a Creation Justice congregation.

Here are three ways you can Stand Up for NCAR this week:

  1. Attend Saturday’s Visibility Event

Local groups are planning a visibility event in front of NOAA on South Broadway and Rayleigh in Boulder the Saturday, December 20 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Organizers say that, “Although we’re focusing on NCAR, this is a highly visible place to show that we demand that NCAR be saved!” Bring signs with a “SAVE NCAR” pro-science theme.

2. Contact your legislators to ask them to push back

Representative Neguse, Senators Bennet and Hickenlooper, and Governor Polis have all already put out statements of support for NCAR. But even when they agree with you, expressing your concerns to political representatives helps encourage them to fight harder.

A group is working on adding a call script to the 5 Calls App, so watch for that within the next day if you use that app. Otherwise, you can find contact info for your representative using this tool, https://www.congress.gov/members/find-your-member, or use the American Geophysical Union action email: https://agu.quorum.us/campaign/151565/

3. Encourage friends and relatives to contact the legislators to support NCAR

You can do this by contacting your network directly, or by sharing something on social media.

If you don’t know what to post, here are a few possible posts or items from others that you can share to help people understand how important NCAR is:
