Pool & Marinela  The Plastic Religion

In 2014, two Argentine artists, Marianela Perelli and Pool Paolini, turned 33 models of Barbie and Ken into religious icons for an exhibition called Barbie, the Plastic Religion which was displayed at Popa Galeria in Buenas Aris. The show featured Barbie as the Virgin Mary and Ken as Jesus Christ, and included religious figures from Catholicism, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism with versions of Barbie as Joan of Arc, Mary Magdalene and the Virgin of Lourdes. The show provoked widespread controversy in several languages from Argentina to France.

In 2016, the artists were invited by Mattel and Les Art Decoratifs (Palais du Louvre, Paris) to display four of their pieces in the museum of decorative arts in the Palais du Louvre, Paris, and were also received in the Vatican by Pope Francisco who accepted a gift of their Barbie, "Our Lady of Lujan".

During the month of December, Pool and Marianela will be presenting their Barbie, the Plastic Religion in Los Angeles at La Luz de Jesus Gallery. Among the numerous pieces in the exhibition, the artists will be displaying two new paintings created in the style of Byzantine icon (gold leaf), portraits of Barbie ("Our Lady of Mattel") and Ken ("Sacred Heart of Mattel"); 12 Via Crucis altarpieces; an eight-piece nativity scene; 13 small good leaf paitnings; and a Barbie Porsche 911 with Ken as Krishna, Buddah and Jesus.

THIS SATURDAY!
Al Ridenour's Krampus Book Party

Book signing, reading, and musical performance
Sunday, November 6, 2016, 1- 6PM

View Feral House book trailer at this link

Last appearing at La Luz de Jesus at the 2012 publication party for Tales of the San Francisco Cacophony Society, a national group of guerilla artists and pranksters in which he played a leading role, author  Al Ridenour returns tonight as Krampus researcher par excellence with his new book
The Krampus and the Old, Dark Christmas.

Tonight he'll serve up some history, folklore, and fact on the topic, much of it in direct contradiction to what Americans have come to know of the Krampus through our pop-culture (mis)representations. Along with stories, slides, and video clips, expect some costumed appearances, an audience-participation Krampus Kwiz with prizes (and punishments), and perhaps a musical guest or two. Ridenour will not only be discussing and signing copies of his book, but also demonstrating a form of fortune-telling using molten lead associated with the haunted nights ("Rauhnächte") that form the background to the Krampus mythology.
