Appreciating our community in this holiday season

By Bonnie Kulp

Chamber Executive Director

I'm not sure how it’s possible, but we are coming to the close of 2023. When I started with the chamber in June of 2020, I had no idea what an incredible community I was joining. Yes, I had been here often, but never for an extended time. The people in this community truly care about each other and the wonderful natural resources that surround us.

Please remember to shop small, shop local, and give to those who are less fortunate.

The chamber staff, and our Board of Directors wish all of you and your families a very happy and healthy holiday season.

Here’s to continued success for 2024!

Save the date: Meet the chamber’s new officers and board members at Jan. 25th Annual Meeting

Locals moving into Habitat Meadowlands project

Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity, is building homes, hope, and community. The Milliman Household closed on their home on the 18th of December in the Meadowlands part of the 43-home project, Foundations for our Future. This is the largest project Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity has tackled and is allowing more local families homeownership and the opportunity to build equity. When a local household purchases a home from Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity, they own the land and the house that sits on the land. Our “up north” communities are being revitalized and homeowners are able to live near where they are employed.

“This neighborhood is thriving and as more locals move in, we’re noticing just how needed this project was. We obviously followed the research before starting our builds through Foundations for our Future, but seeing the families bustling around and the holiday decorations on each house has been the icing on the cake.” said Rachel Spino, Director of Operations at Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity. “Each physical house was needed, but now each house represents a family, a family that gets to spend less time worrying about whether their landlord is going to sell their rental and more time on what color to paint the bathroom.”

Thank you to everyone who has supported this project, and welcome Leanne Milliman to the Meadowlands Neighborhood. Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity will be hosting a Housewarming Party for The Milliman household to follow. Please stay tuned via Facebook and our website for updates.
